Parkland student who was filmed slapping teacher will be tried as an adult, facing several charges, city officials say

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.The student who was filmed slapping his teacher at Parkland High School will be tried as an adult, according to Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill.

In a joint news conference between the Forsyth County District Attorney's Office and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, it was revealed that true bills of indictment were returned by a grand jury last week against the juvenile, identified as Aquavious Hickman, for second-degree kidnapping of a teacher by unlawfully confining and restraining her without her consent for the purpose of terrorizing her.

He was also indicted for assault on a government official, that being a teacher, and communicating threats.

Hickman, 17, stated that he would kill her, according to O’Neill.

He was also indicted for second-degree kidnapping of a teacher in a separate incident by unlawfully confining and restraining the male teacher without consent to terrorize him. This separate incident happened on Feb. 1, 2024, while the filmed incident took place on April 15.
