Brian Hales is no longer the longest tenured head coach in Mecklenburg County.

On Monday, Hales took to Butler High School's football account on X to announce that he is stepping down from the role.

Hales has been Butler's head coach since 2011. Under Hales, Butler won the 2012 4AA state championship game over Jack Britt High School by a score of 56-28.

The Bulldogs had eight seasons of double digit wins and won nine total conference championships.

Overall, Butler won 132 games under Hales and only lost 35.

Hales' final season as Butler's head coach resulted in a 12-2 overall record, a Southwestern 4A Conference championship, and a trip to the fourth round.

In the post to X, Hales said, "Once A Bulldog, Always A Bulldog! Earlier today, I informed our kids that I am stepping down as HFC at BHS. All is well on my end! It’s just time for me to figure out the NEXT 50 years! What a ride! Thank you all for EVERYTHING! Much love and respect! Hales, out!"
