C. C. It's just a phone call away for me. I'm looking forward to answering your questions a little bit later. But first I'd like to express So sincere friends to share some parts of my 1st 5 months and enjoy some of the timely publix affecting college athletics in our country. All of you are well aware of the pandemic created unprecedented challenges over the last 15 months to say last year were unique is certainly an understatement. And we continue with gratitude to the college frontline workers who have unselfishly sacrificed and and put themselves in harm's way to serve others. My sincere thanks to all of our ears by extraordinarily entirely efforts by the A. C. C. Medical advisory group. Work continues our school safely and successfully managed athletics and pandemic. Watching the resiliency commitment and sacrifices our student athletes is inspiring and they didn't have the ability and communication by our coaches, administrators. Really successful blueprint fact that we're working together. I don't know how to get into our student athletes, coaches and administrators what they were able to accomplish this past year. So on behalf of the entire conference let me say thank you. What makes this past year's achievements even more incredible that are active programs shine while facing so many challenges As we just with their on screen league champion at all 27 of sponsored sports And at 10 different institutions on a. c. c. championships. A. C. C. Team also won five N. C. A. Team championships, Virginia one Week's first ever action title in women's money Notre dame. More time making it three of the last four national titles for the final irish North Carolina took all the third straight field hockey title and then the 21st for the ACC including 14 in the last 20, it wasn't always easy island lost in college between Syracuse to win the SDA women's Lacrosse championship for its first final, implore industry 16 S. A. wins championships and has that team in the national title a lot of times in the last 12 seasons. And finally Virginia in as secretary NFC Championship. Lacrosse marking the 25th title for carbon programs, Including nine of the last 1314 titles since 2000 And then additionally recorded 24 individual national titles accomplished record Overall seven sec schools were on a team or individual national title this year, simply amazing. I'm saying as the athletic success were the we continue to leave its computers with an average graduation success rate of 92% dispatch. The our average of the previous year was two points higher than the national average and the sort of all the system will remain the only compass To have multiple teams registered GSR scores 90 or higher every year since 2005. And then the most recent report, four of all programs were on 90 Duke, Louisville boston College and in Virginia, as you can tell. So inspired by our students program, schools and conference were able to accomplish during such a difficult year for all of us Over a period of four weeks and I had a chance to visit our 15 incredible institutions, spend any time with each president, chancellor, athletics director, I got the athletic director, senior women's administrator, coaches, administrators and support staff and most importantly, student allergies was an amazing and energizing experience. Well any chance to gain institutional knowledge and familiarity from an academic and athletic perspective. The visits also provided the first hand knowledge of how schools feel all conference. What's working, where do we need to improve forecasting our future and not serve the shit overall. The feedback was very positive. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of wonderful accomplishments and initiatives and continue to be successful year in europe with our conference. It's important that we never stand, still remain focused on the future and work to see around the corner what area we all have more to do across our country. Our social justice and diversity and inclusion members. Leadership are soon after the tools and raising an ongoing commitment to racial and social justice has been and continues to be awe inspiring More than a year ago. The ACC4 stands more champions of racial equity and that includes representatives from all the Congress office in our 15 member institutions as part of the S. E. C. S. Continued commitment to social justice and racial quality. Our schools and conference office implement a number of initiatives and programming Over the past year based on the work by four A. C. The name of the spring was activism through sports, which highlighted by notable asset three webinars virtual office across the league 15 campuses and our own conference. All of this in Greensboro, many of our championships took place during the Unity weeks large. You have coaches and staff to participate. We're going to use the oil and tires to the national anthem and to incorporate every voices sing for our championship competitions. We are grateful for the support show. I A C. C. Never, not only covering and participating in the previously mentioned initiatives But also creating specific programs and features such as the virtual roundtable hosted by failing tough for the trail blazers. BCC nine no struggle no progress. You're not going to commitment difficult conversations and initiatives around inequality, racial social justice and incredibly important, making us all stronger as commissioner. And I'm confident our conference will continue to enhance our dedication and commitment to diversity and inclusion. We will also not lose our responsibility to the importance of supporting and promoting the mental health and well being. Are student athletes and programs. The past made police much further annually. Cc mental health and wellness along and leave together together, learn from each other and share best practices as we work together to continue to break down any stigma associated with mental health changing years earlier this morning about the elimination of police inter conference transfer rule, which college students the opportunity to transfer and compete immediately at another A. C. C. Institution. While we have every student has a positive life changing experience at an institution, we also recognize that sometimes changes can be hood are necessary the decision to offer immediate eligibility for inter conference transported in the best interest. This is it creates greater flexibility during their religion careers. Place the A. C. C. As a national leader in this area. We will continue to be proactive in our approach to enhance the experience and how we shape the future of college athletics, the best interests of the student and these are also motivating force and the decision to fully support the opportunity to benefit from their name image and likeness. We appreciate the internal policy now in place. We will continue to work with congressional leaders to enact federal legislation that will protect and benefit all student athletes in the long term. And then I will also ensure fairness and equity in college sports and we can't afford to lose. There's no question I'm going topic and I believe will work tirelessly collaboratively with other conferences on behalf of the million 10,000 families that annually compete in the A. C. C. You turn our focus to our medical advisory group brilliantly by our share dr. Campbell dude continues to be regularly and anticipated updated report to be released in the coming police as Congress. Our priority remains in health and safety of student happens, coaches, administrators and in Kansas as it relates to the vaccines and any policies or mandates. Those decisions will remain at the discretion of each member institution Personally, I believe that vaccinations are attributable to the protection all that help you to achieve the goal of eliminating COVID-19 virus and its various. But I also deeply respect that I get vaccinated is a personal choice because we approached all seasons. There's no question that increasing the number of vaccinations will provide the best chance of our student athletes and it seems to compete office using resources from the account was created the P. S. A. Encourage everyone to learn more about the benefits of Covid 19 vaccine. I'm also confident that our campuses continue their ongoing education and communication related to the affordable vaccinations and other mitigation strategies. Any other approaches continue our after this came to a lot of tests, contact tracing. As recently as yesterday athletic directors to discuss the necessary phone calls regarding scenario may be able to participate in a contest Due to COVID-19 factions. Contact what that context would be considered by the conference, similar to elevated animal advisory report will have decision in the near future and if not for the ball, we'll have to hear this week. We're outside about Just over six weeks from now. Football teams will be kicking off one 2021 season. When you look at non college bound to natural, there's no shortage of excitement. Saul our teams are playing tosses a conference table in the country. in addition to 23 games and qualified opponents, The 39 conference games against teams ranked file 2020 Associated Press to 25 All teams at least one conference 19 to the competition is a labor Day weekend with over five consecutive days. A fantastic television partners by national throw season. We have a strong and important relationship with ESPN. I appreciate your conversations and look to the future and maximizing collective successes. This is included, which is 3rd year, August. it's truly hard to believe that the last time the gathered for this little often off event, a CNN was still approximately a month for the launch. We're going to happen here today. Behind my hands on average this year. Is that right? A CNN is currently available in nearly 70 million souls and our partnerships have exceeded initial expectations over the first two years, including in distribution and revenue. In addition to the football games that have already been released by a traditional games that will be featured, uh, this season, Boston College on Saturday October two And in order a Virginia attack on Saturday, October nine. The addition of the reinforces that works on scheduling and its surrounding them with a comprehensive studio and I can't programming following that story telling and move through the next day. They kicked off. The police had to do for additional product that either way off for the BCS national championship game. In each of the past eight years, Six different teams have played in the capital, one in 2013. Football National, as I said since my first day Commissioner football. No more poverty for us for all of us our schools leave never ours coaches. We've been collaborating months to ensure that the people of all behind 24, 365 working together the further elevate football on the sea just get started. We'll have many aspects and the partnership for us, including our tremendous television all bars. Yes, I'm incredibly pleased with your hand level of communication, energy and focus within our comments specific to our law programs. We force strengthen future further in the valleys, deep unease that was committed to the football programming. Elevate our football championship game enhancing our machine program and collectively to solve national issues and in that space this is all underway. But there's much more to go in the postseason. We know 2021 small on everyone and attitudes are all partners and the communities that they feel it deeply benefit from their share of all contributions. Great post season full force this year 5, 1 of the interesting close to close changes to come out of the playoffs as we were using a stolen, engaging conversations. What is that? Some overseas? Most of the board leads managed to participate. You see the presentation that was given to the false managers yesterday afternoon and later today. It will be shared Without our 14 and it'll all the coaches appreciate subgroup committee as we continue to evaluate evaluate proposed options. It was earlier this spring will be represented on CMP managers by Clemson University. President Jim Cleamons begins his 10 year after the incredible job for president john prior to his retirement, it was our charge. Another representative served in this prestigious role and as a conference were extremely pleased that President Clinton humbly retaking the success of this is undeniable and it's important that we ensure any future evolutions will only enhance the college of all regular season. So let me say all of you can for your interest in the sec and I hope that you enjoy the next few days here in charlotte. The sec has so much to be proud of and I'm truly humbled and honor to serve this amazing collection of world class institutions and the students that represent the A. C. C. Thank you always. All right. Time for our question and answer portion of today's forum. We do have three microphone holders got one left on the right and the middle. Please raise your hand to as many questions as we can. We're gonna start over here on the far, far left. Give us your name and affiliation please. And your question Andrea Hiddleston ESPN dot com. Jim Good to see you in person, uh, to question on the vaccinations. Can you give us an idea of where a sec football teams right now in terms of hitting the 85% threshold and the second Berta is several other conferences have already announced that they're not wearing sandals catholic. They would have to work it, wondering why cities still waiting to make a lot and give you a very and so I can see you last year. Let's see satellite are we had a chance to feel that our athletic directors yesterday we have over half our group is about 85% of the whole $7 cost. And we all feel like that's a reasonable target across the A. C. C. Known as of yesterday and then overall from the family population and numbers even higher according to those schools and that have currently as it relates to not making a declaration of it's going to be a cancellation or orphan. We all really want to wait a couple more weeks or so. I think the more information that we're gonna be able to gather, I think we'll understand that marrying a little bit. It's really recommendation our medical group along with our 80 s and our president. So there's a draft line and that at least is sweet. We didn't need to make that before the bombing and we certainly would be transparent and that made and let everybody know. We're gonna come right down here in the center I about halfway now. There we go. Your name and affiliation. Hello is a three point conversion now with the world that allowing players to take advantage of the name likeness and image is. What are your thoughts on it? And are you all coming up with any courses or anything to help the players out? The one that we're dealing with so much a lot of money. So let me just say a little bit nice to see thank you being your, I can't tell you why are 50 schools and how they navigate the uncharted territory over the last 68 months to what eventually became tuition on July one there is a constant education going on on our campuses. The A. C. C. Office itself tries to help supplements of questioning. There's been an education across again our footprint. Um The success stories on many. We're seeing all of them all that in our own country and I think it makes all of us feel a sense of gratification that we can do this thing but we have more challenges that we don't get it national legislation and I want to speak about that because I think there's an incredible opportunity for our company but we need a national sand. Everyone expects us to play a national competition schedule and we all 50 states that not having the national standard will cause major disruption. You already see across the country. The wide range of the staring at times depending on what secret what people are going to do. And so that's one 2nd is we have has to help an anti trust we can't sustain constantly litigation to the enterprise college analytics that has to be wrapped into it. I think the third element for making into likeness for us as we look at the features, what can we do that? All the athletes once in the school from a medical standpoint, can we provide an additional medical care for them? Can we mandate that 23 years, whatever that looks like a period of time. Some schools are doing it, but we certainly don't have uniform the across 351 school's tradition because one can we they also not for all, still have to go back to school that could be wrapped into this legislation and then finally, it can be able to manage it. Just can and equity from those resources have to be distributed Most of our students families, 500,000 and that compete naturally exports in adults. So that continues to be a mom and call what I hope doesn't happen is that because we have some success here. You're seeing the great stories of student and being able to use soldiers like students, their name, image and likeness that lose the sense of urgency In our conference. I'll finish here in our conference. We have forced rules with state legislation or forced into statement state legislation. We have to with state directors and we have four that rely on the role. And you can see within R15 schools in our 10 states, there's an unevenness to what's to balance to do. So I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. We need federal help And I think that will get it. But I would sit around and wait Taking the next question to stay on your last side right there in the 3rd row affiliation. Hi, are burning. And there are times, uh, you look to the future of the stuff yourself, with your presence around the, uh, involved in the work and you still have a colony in the market and lead it. So I would say this, this is the right time to have a complete holistic review, the S a leadership structure. What do we want to do moving forward? There's been so many things that have happened in our space here, but the time is right. No predetermined course. Let's move on. When I look at what we really are. Super reliant on Indianapolis perspective Governors. What's going structure looks like? Do we have the right garden structure? One size fits all. Is the council working working incredibly hard. Is that the right structure. Again, all sides of shapes within 3 51 championships, we had some a couple issues this year with championships. It's the thing I should love to do. So the assessment, their championships and then enforcement, I'm getting ready to go in august with one of our schools to Indianapolis. Some of those students at the time team that will be subjected to whatever penalties potentially be handed down, who administer all we'll never solve. And so timeless fairness in the system that being said esa also has done a lot of great things and continues to do some really good work. So this thing isn't done Indianapolis. I think we all have our finger prints responsibility. We have as leaders, whether it's commissioners or athletic directors and presidents. So again, this time, this would be a great time. President Obama has called for it. Kind of a recalibration of the essay. I think you should take them up on that opportunity. And let's work collaboratively with with our conferences with our presidents, athletic directors and such. And let's spend the next 80 12 months figuring this cigar because more changes come. We're gonna sit over our left hand side in the back. I just hired a lot of times, um, uh, post your, uh, fertility Day name, uh, social media and the fans are frustrated. They rely on Comcast. Can't get that. We're uh, we're going to be promising the deals and areas are partially half that's the context of the houses and now they're seeing the progress made possibility before the season. Thanks for being here. I appreciate the question. It's one of the top artists had been bristle. That's great conversations to the Taro madness and we have a tremendous relationship distribution. It's critical for us. And when I visited those 15 institutions, that was kind of a cry of all of our schools is how do we get distribution wider? I think we have a great plan coming up, a lot of the carriers and providers, including Comcast renewal is coming up this late summer into the fall and I think we're making tremendous progress with them. Those frustrations are real and will never be the conference that we need to be until we get some of those issues taken care of. So we have a great strategy. It's the top point. Every conversation that we had with our partners, they understand that yet. So we're hopeful to make a big dent in the distribution. Coming up, come back over here to Iraq in the middle aisle on our left luke James. Thank you, hmm. Observer. Um Jack Swarbrick said that 12 team playoff goes through. He likes the way that it was set up for another day and it kind of removes the imperative of having to play in a conference championship to have access to a national championship. How would you assess the sort of role of Notre Dame, the A. C. C. Going forward? If there isn't any possibility at any point that in order, dame would potentially give up football independence. And how do you sort of assess that relationship as it's working now? You've got the Notre Dame logo behind you and they're not here, baby. I just uh listen, I guess I'll go over the present time to pass to make it to the future. So I'll jump around a little bit. I think we all got those, what it would be like Irrigating the comments. This tasks all that was a really beautiful and beneficial relationship to both. Not today. In the sec, you had a chance playing fantastic. Then a chance to win the national championship will compete in the CMP. So we have a real life example what actually lies when I look back. Obviously I spent time there and they got close ties there. She badly son their daughter. So I think the institution, I think it really well led by actress president john Jenkins 2 32013 when they didn't join the league, they declare they were excited about being in all their sports, but they valued independence breaking and I respect that the old kind of, you know, equipment is not coordinating most things. One is the catholic second is independence and sometimes get in the reverse order. Sometimes it like an independent tv more than cattle, it's supposed to be job. Listen, they know the interest, it's saying less than basketball, less ambassador since I've been here, but also the standard, right? And I was working. And our concentration right now are 40 schools. Um And so who knows where the future is going to go. Um But I love the schools that we have but you always have to be ready to add and nor dane contracted lee if they were to join the conference Against structures by Commissioners offered in 2013, joined the AC. So that's where we're actually appreciate the question and we'll see where this goes. Sit down the left hand side of the aisle right here. Tom here. Hi jim tom d'angelo comic post giving back to the vaccines. Many schools including Notre dame implementing athlete students happened to you guys assassinated. Would you encourage that to your institutions? And if not some encourage some kind of protocol similar the NFL has to do with greatly encouraging players to the best We are encouraging. It's split. We have seven institutions where it's mandated to be a student on campus evacuated. And it's not just what according to what you may believe. Just public and violence. Um it's a perfect example of public when they done, there's no question that there'll be a higher probability to be able to play now vaccinated. You can just sense it and see it and feel it. And our policies are going in that direction to go with african talent today question. But if we vaccinated, it's gonna take a lot of contracting uh contact tracing issues and such. Um and as the medical experts have indicated those that are fascinated our subjects, getting the virus and much control for those that don't. So I believe in being vaccinated at a family of healthcare workers. I have been on the front of my eyes but its policy interest, I identify my opening comments. It's such a personal decision. And so should not have to figure while to figure out what's best for them. And we're all hopeful and we can go through the season without any cancellation or forfeitures of any of our contests in any of our support and that as soon as you can say healthy and safe. Mhm. Over here on our left hand side, far left, close the doors. Uh, well, come inside. Uh, you spoke a little bit about the spring meetings about the transfer portal and the coach's concern. Can you kind of have a little bit more about that? And what is the concern? Commissioner reward that the issues causes especially in basketball. It's like it's a game of musical chairs. That's what worries me is that you should stop and there's not enough chairs is not enough seats is not a scholarship for those in the transfer portal. Um, but the freedom of movement one hour in that decision and I am completely with that. And I know as a former coach, really, really like career, how difficult that can be when it comes to rosters, when it comes to roster management. When it comes to maybe like lessons, when things get tough, you can't just bounce out somewhere else. So we're working through it. Um, as a leading, understand what it looks like in the different sports. As mentioned, 27 sports is different phones to transfer legislative experience. Some of our sports are really hire that are at a higher percentage of students transferring some other sports. I don't think you have enough data yet to declare one way or another how we held this thing, but I think it goes back to recruiting and doing the very best I can to identify the prospects that fit our institutions. So more work to calm that. And again, I feel the coaches frustration is real. But in the end it was the right thing to do for us. That happens at the time. This is the kind of people are gonna serve here, David. Yeah, mm hmm. Day on ESPN uh talk a little bit about the expanded playoff and then the feedback that you've been asking for. I know Dabo yesterday noted that his team had suggested they were not thrilled about additional games. I know Matt Brown said similar comments about north Carolina's players. When you hear that feedback, how much does that figure into sort of the bigger picture view of the expanded playoffs? Is there a way to kind of address their concerns while still thinking about playoff expansion? Thanks to? Because the question there is, I don't want anybody took more close. These are good or bad in the playoff. We're still learning about the playoffs and the football which is a day of relative to see a presentation. And so they didn't feel exactly the same way I respect so much math and at all. You know, they're two of our tremendous coaches, they have incredible experience When I finished up in Dallas and in the end of June Tuesday has 16 Monday Tuesday and brought out 12, 13 playoff is recommended by the door had Wednesday like new call with our, with our football coaches. And I asked him to do a few things. get together and talk about it and discuss how they feel about it. To your point about too many games length of season and health and safety issues. What is through the regular season, all those things but as important to talk to the sit down and get a feel and a read. So you're starting to see as off put sweet uh press statement yesterday and I've seen, you know, talk both of them pretty regularly seeing here later today tomorrow. So those are real concerns. But I think we have to be open minded to it. Um, and it doesn't mean that we're going to support it. The last piece. Your question, David about what influence us and wants us to learn influence President Clinton as we ultimately have one of the votes. But I want to socialize this process. I want to socialize the proposal. I don't want I want to be transparent. I want I want us to be able to hear from most constituent groups to coaches and then making an educated, have an educated position for our Congress. There's a there's a great thing about two. We talk a little bit of awesome Really major challenges to this thing. There's some terrific things about access and opportunity. Sport has access to three Of the schools plays for the football. Most of our other sports that around 20% and above mental basketball that 19% of baseball and soccer and others are there. Um so you know there's a debate this thing which is great but we need that. Uh I look forward by september ready to have another city and you have to see how the position on the understanding take your next week right here in the middle. I on our last please. Uh William W. B. A. Right. I was wondering in terms of recruiting an N. I. L. And increasing the prominence of A. C. C. Football. Does that worry you in terms of competing with other conferences like the sec that are offering more and more potential economic upside the players. Uh huh. That's back to the point about having a national standard. We can all get on the same footing for all the things I described. But in the end I love what we offer. Uh love the offer across our 14 schools in the sports football, the academic and athletic balance. The competition, coaches kinds of leaders to create in our programs, the games we play the network we partner with certainly acknowledge. Look at a specific comments and compare and contrast. But you can get some national legislation. We have tremendous comments tools that arrives anyone in the country. Last question back left. I'll jim David thiel from the Richmond Times dispatch. You mentioned earlier coming from a family of healthcare workers. You also come from a family of olympic sport athletes. What have you told your two Children for olympic sport athletes about in Iowa either then dabbled into this monetization. She did uh They taught me on you know it's real when it's under the roof. You mentioned two of our lives or currently student now he's one of the A. C. C. One of the I. D. And they have some real ideas about it and I think where it stands right now is a race star. It just is. So they're thinking about it and they haven't quite out of it but they are considering some things and uh that'll be fun because sometimes where my dad had with sometimes we're the commissioner had them. So it's a kind of the role of media but it's good. Again I know it was a process getting to a point relative to the average in like this but it's like other liberation had a coward sports most recently had cost of attendance. And I was fortunate enough to chair the council at that time and I know that the confirmation that took place cost of attendance is gonna imbalance some schools can afford some schools can, it's really gonna hurt religious sports. It's been fantastic situation valleys. So we'll get through this and be stronger. But in the end you do need to take a look at over and college sports and really start to get together and do some assassin and do some long range plan. So appreciate everyone being here. I think it's fantastic that we've been able to get together and see each other face to face. Um, we'll continue to be available for you throughout the next couple of days. Be safe in your travels. Look forward to seeing you on different campuses. I get around the fall and I always wanted to be available to you. And uh, I really do appreciate the work that you do. The importance that it has can cost sports. So have a great day noises. Three.
