Carolina Panthers
Fernandez and Lea: Chuba Hubbard was a bright spot during another frustrating performance from the Panthers
Louis Fernandez and Chris Lea analyze what went wrong for the Panthers during their 21-18 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
One and 11 is not a fun place to be for the Carolina Panthers, Wrel sports anchor, Chris Lee joining us. Now, uh, Chris, I'm trying to look at the, the silver linings. The bright side this game did come down to the final drive. A couple of interesting moments there at the end. What were your thoughts on those, uh, short yardage situations for the Panthers? Yeah, I think it was a microcosm of everything that's wrong with the Carolina Panthers right now. It's, uh, personnel issues, also a play calling issue, stick with the play calling. Um, Thomas Brown back with the play play calling. Now that Frank Reich is out, um, and he really only still has the offense that is, that was left by Frank Reich, right? And that offense doesn't really have a lot of a power run game to it. So on third and one or fourth and one, the Panthers and that type of offense are probably going to throw. Uh, but, and you also wish that you had somebody, this is the personnel issue now that you could rely on to get you that final yard if you needed the yard. Just push the pile and, uh, their running backs are all, you know, decent guys. Uh, but they're all with the same athletic profile about 5 11 6 ft tall. Um, Hareem Black, she is a little bit smaller but, uh, those guys are between 205 and £215. Those aren't the guys that's gonna, you know, get wrapped up by Vita Vela and still be able to push and get an extra yard, uh, when you want them to. So that's one of those things that I think it shows overall the, the failure that the Carolina Panthers have been this entire season, uh, that you can't get it off of, uh, those two plays. So, unfortunately, it just shows what everything that's just wrong right now. A third and one and 1/4 and one for the Panthers there at the very end of the game. Uh, Chris, you did talk about the running backs a little bit and we do have to give credit where credit is due to Hubbard. He had over 100 yards rushing. There has been a change in how the Panthers ground game looks now that he is getting the majority of the carries ever since that Miles Sanders injury. But what, what can you say about what he's bringing to this Panthers offense? Does it look like there's maybe there's a little bit of life here. He was the best player on offense, uh, today in, in my opinion and he did an amazing job first time for the season that, uh, a Panthers, uh, Rusher is going over 100 yards. And so he's, uh, looking really good with that. Um, and he, I think it's firmly taking that number one running back position, uh, from somebody like Miles Sanders. Miles Sanders was, um, not a bad acquisition but it's not what you wanted to get as far as what you paid for. You paid way too much for Miles Sanders and, and the Panthers giving off, giving him the richest uh free agent running back deal that any team has given any player uh this past off season and just for him to just be shown up by what for your fourth round draft pick from a few years ago in, in, in Tuba Hubbard. So, um you know, he's definitely taking that mantle. He's uh helping the Carolina Panthers right now and he got the two touchdowns today um to, you know, to keep them into the game. Uh shout outs to Chuba Hubbard. I, I think this is a guy that the Panthers should look into keeping around. Uh But more so as a number two, he needs a guy uh in front of him that probably is a little bit more dynamic and somebody who could push the pile. But definitely somebody that if you're looking towards the future, I think you would want him to still stay on your team at this point. It's all about evaluation, right. Trying to find the right players to fit what you want to do in the future for the Carolina Panthers. We've talked a lot about the offense. I wanna turn to the defense now and, and two points. I want you to, to touch on here, Chris one giving up a 70 plus yard touchdown to Mike Evans who congratulations for getting over 10,000 yards. A lot of those have come against the Carolina Panthers in his career. Um, and Brian Burns getting ejected. Uh, what kind of effect did that have on what the Panthers are trying to do there at the end of the game? Yeah. Um, first off with, uh, giving up that 75 yarder to, to Mike Evans and, you know, just the Panthers secondary, that was the one that they gave up, you know, today. Um, and you would think that with having JC Horn back his first time, first time, uh, playing since that Atlanta game in week one that maybe he'd look a little better. He didn't look very well and he ended up getting benched himself and that could be rust because he hasn't played in so long. Um, and maybe he doesn't have his speed back because he is coming off of a hamstring injury. So maybe he has to work back and, and he was a little tired. So, uh, very unfortunate to see how that played out, but also very unfortunate to see Brian Burns get ejected. It's, uh, I'm not disagreeing with the call whatsoever. Uh, and typically in these situations, I'd be upset with the player, but with all that, Brian Burns has gone through, uh, with this team ever since he's been drafted from, with this team, uh, he's had to deal with losing and he didn't get paid to the level that he thought he should have gotten paid, uh, in the off-season, Carolina Panthers didn't see that value, but they keep him on the roster and, uh, he's going through that. He's literally the, the best piece that you have on his team besides Bryce Young, if you're looking towards the future and they haven't put their money where their mouth is as far as showing him what the value is that he has, uh, this, the future of this franchise. And that was just a frustration play that really wasn't, you know, against the Bucks. He's frustrated with everything and I, I really hope that at some point the Carolina Panthers can rectify this, uh, with him and that, uh, that the, the, that the relationship going forward isn't, uh, isn't fractured. I think you hit on, uh, one of the words to add to the collage when you look at this Carolina Panthers season, Chris frustration, frustration. Chris Lee Wrl sports anchor talking about the Panthers 21 to 18 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers falling to one and 11 this season. Chris. Thank you so much.
