Gov. Cooper signs bid for NC to host 2027 World University Games
Gov. Roy Cooper presents his bid for the Triangle to host the 2027 Summer World University Games. South Korea is the other finalist. The final decision will be made Nov. 12.
sports day. It's fitting that we would be here with the committee that's going to be making the decision about where the 2027 phase. Ooh, summer world university games will be played. Obviously we want it right here in north Carolina. Uh, president editor and I have had discussions today. I've already told him how I declared north Carolina and signed a proclamation declaring north Carolina as the center of the college basketball universe that we don't mess around with the world is the entire universe. And that, uh, the love of sports here in north Carolina is a real passion and what bringing these games to north Carolina particularly centered in the triangle. And the triad will do is emphasize not only how sports can bring us all together, uh, across the world, but emphasizing the importance of our colleges and universities and those students who are there not only to get a great education but also to participate in sports. We have 100 and 30 colleges and universities across our state, 19 of them are in the triangle and the triad, more than a quarter of a million students, college students are here in the triangle and the triad. And we know that this will be a fantastic place to host these games. And I look forward to signing this proclamation and officially presenting north Carolina's bid to the president of the zoo. And I'm gonna introduce him now, leon's enter Mr president. You could say a word or two people of north Carolina. Thank you, Governor. Good morning everybody. It's a great honor and the pleasure and the privilege for me and for my team to be here today in this residence. You know, we are always very pleased to see how professional everything is prepared in the United States. Number one, but number two also to be so spontaneous to meet each other to talk to each other, to exchange the ideas and what we learned here is the great commitment, the great enthusiasm, the passion for sports on all levels, not only for the top professional levels, but also for the kids level or recreational aspects. And then I say the professionalism, what could be better plans than to host this meeting today? Governor at the international day of University Sports proclaimed by unesco together with all over the world today in ASIA and new Zealand and Australia. They sleep already, they did already their sports, but in the other part of the world they do sports in all universities. In all our memberships, we have some 170 national university sport federations members being official and I can assure you of course there's a competition between United States and Korea now, but I can assure you that a lot of them would really like to come to the United States in january. We will host the world university winter games in lake plastic in your country and the ones who will be there probably they will see which enthusiasm with which um, passion. You organize sport and Governor with your support and Mayor review support would like to get the games here in 2027 legacy sustainability and the support from all levels, academic level political level sports federations and clubs. They are crucial for us and in these few days we have been here, we have seen this really is provided by all the levels and I would like to congratulate and thank you for the government. Thank you. Thank you. So what we'll now do is to sign this proclamation and everybody would want to come and stand behind here later. We're glad to have Mayor Marion bolton. Mhm. Officially sign this proclamation. Thank you so much. Thank you very much. Yeah, that's a great idea. All right now, Mr President. If you come forward please line here, that's what we should do. Um, having signed this proclamation uh, talking about the importance of uh, our universities and our college athletes across the world uh, and in celebration of this time that you have spent together here in the United States. And I want to thank all of the hard work that's gone into this uh, from our team in the United States and in north Carolina. Local state government businesses are universities, people who have worked so hard. This is officially the bid from the state of north Carolina, entitled Many teams. One dream and Mr President want to officially present this book to you and we know that it will be a winning one. Thank you Mr President. Thank you. Thank you so much. Many teams. One dream. How could what could be better to demonstrate the will to host the games. Thank you. Governor. Thank you so much. Mr President, thank you very much. So we will now take questions from the media from the President. For for me, if you have any governor cooper, what's the potential economic impact for this region? What would you say? Hill, uh, third party studies Governor that show it could be anywhere from 150 million to as much as 370 million other questions, Governor. He tell us a little bit about what is included in that book. What are some of the points that you guys are really trying to sell our colleges and universities uh provide so much not only for education of our students but research, economic development and of course athletics and we had a conversation about the importance of athletics, How it helps to mold young people uh to build team spirit, collaboration, dedication. Uh, sports, it might be trite to say, but I believe that in my heart sports are a reflection of life and you can learn so much about life participating in sports. So I think our colleges and universities are some of the best in the country. But it also talks about the tourism aspect of our our area, our state, how people will be coming from all over the world to visit here. There's so many things to see and do in north Carolina. It also talks about our communities, our businesses and all of the things that is looking for in a place to host the World Games. That talks about accommodations and transportation, all of the things that they would need uh, to make this decision about hosting these games here. Either one of you give us an idea of competition in north Carolina. If I understood correctly, your question, you, you mean the other bidder of these games? Yes, it's chungchong province, mega mega politan city in Korea. And Korea hosted our games already in 2003 in 2015. Guangzhou and they hosted the Winter Games correctly in 97. And you know, the concept is a bit different. I can tell you that they don't have yet. The facilities, not all the facilities they have to construct it because their goal is to develop a region in the center of Korea. So among others to bring companies there, you have already a lot of companies here in north Carolina. They have to construct a lot of venues, but they have a huge support, financial support from the central government And here you have all the venues ready. You have the sports ready and you develop some other ideas, what was mentioned also by the governor, some other goals to develop the region through this event and our friends from the Olympic Committee of the United States told us in order to the World Cup in 26, you have the Olympic games in 28 and the World University Games would fit perfectly in between and this might be a difference to Korea. Did I answer your question? Thank you questions questions through hearings last week. Obviously on the hurricane response of your administration and policy watchers will run a lot of damage coverage. Can you tell me? I know you will often say that help can never come quickly enough. But how do you assess your grade work uh recovers from? Uh Excuse me? Yes, well, we must get people into their homes as fast as we can. Uh This has been a multipronged approach with government working together with businesses and nonprofits and We've been able to get more than 10,000 people back in their homes, but until everyone has been put back in their home, we're not going to rest. Uh I've asked for improvements with in core and they are undertaking those efforts and I expect things to get better and I believe that they will. Another off topic question. So you heard Senator Byrd kind of had a cool reception to the health care associations offer on Medicaid expansion with the con reforms in it. What are your thoughts about where things stand and what the next steps need to be? I have urged Senator Berger to make a counter offer and for us to keep working at this when we have lives at stake When there's $421 million dollars a month that we are turning away and federal assistance for healthcare, we don't have any time to lose. So I'm hoping, and continuing to push for dialogue back and forth to reach a settlement on Medicaid expansion. Whatever it takes, we have to be all in on this. Thanks guys. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for being here. It was a pleasure seeing you again, man. Alright, great job.
