Carolina Panthers
Hintz and Lea: Panthers started fast but ultimately could not keep up with the Dolphins
Kacy Hintz and Chris Lea analyze the Panthers loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Welcome back into sports extra. Let's bring in the Chris Lee who is in house today, Chris here. I was thinking that we were going to be actually talking about a Panthers win with you in the house, but it didn't turn out that way. Uh, the first quarter though, the Panthers able to sustain a couple of long drives, they get up two touchdowns was that indicative of what this Panthers offense maybe could be. I, I think so. The Panthers up 14 and nothing in the first quarter and that was their biggest lead of the season so far and things just look good. They had some really good drive and, and some sustained drives a 64 yard drive, then a 74 yard drive to get up 14 to nothing and shout outs to Frank Reich because a lot of people will be getting on him for his play calling. The play calling looked good. It looked creative. It put the Miami Dolphins on their heels. This is a legit super bowl contending team that had a hard time with the Panthers in the first quarter and then things kind of went off the rails for the Panthers a little bit, but that first quarter, things look really good. Bryce Young looked comfortable and he was getting, uh, protected by his offensive line for the most part there. So hopefully they can take that piece of tape and use that as something to build on as they head to the bi week with Miles Sanders out today. Tuba Hubbard giving a bulk of the carries and boy, he had a pretty good outing 88 yards rushing and the first touchdown of the game, obviously, it was good to see him have the production he had. But how important is it for the offense to get good, consistent rushing attack? Yeah, the Panthers really rushing attack hasn't really been existence since the Atlanta game. That was week one. That was the last time that the Carolina Panthers had any, uh, uh, running back go over 50 yards rushing. It's been since week one. Ok. This is week six. So the Panthers absolutely needed this. And part of those first two drives for the Panthers. Chuba Hubbard was huge in that, in getting that run game going and he had 50 yards just then, then he kind of slowed down after that because the Panthers slowed down on the rushing attack after that. So it pretty much showed that you needed to use Tuba Hubbard a little bit more and to use that rushing attack a little bit more. Now, here's the thing, Miles Sanders may not may be out of a job when he comes back from his injury because as miles, as I said before, it's been since week one, since the Panthers running back had over 50 yards. And that was Tuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders, Cuba Hubbard in week one, only had 12, less yards than Miles Sanders did and half the carries nine versus 18. So right now, Chuba Hubbard is looking like the best running back that the Carolina Panthers have on their roster. I would hope that after the bi week they get some stuff together. Hopefully Miles Sanders comes back, uh, healthy, but looks like Chuba Hubbard might be RB one and I think Panthers fans wouldn't be upset if that ended up being the case. Me neither because not for nothing. He is a good Alberta boy. All right, you mentioned they're going into the bi week tonight. Frank Reich said, you know, they've got a good sample size in order to self scout, Chris, if you're looking at one thing, what is that big thing that they've got to self scout? You know, I'll give you one thing on each side of the ball for the offense. You really do have to figure out how to protect Bryce Young and give him a little bit more time. He still got sacked way too many times. I believe it was four sacks on the night. Uh, from the Miami Dolphins. Christian Wilkins, shout out to him. He got two of them and, uh, it's just a little bit too much, uh, for the, for the Carolina Panthers. So keep Bryce upright, figure out what's happening because that interior part of that offensive line is just leaking way too much. And I, I think Ikey U kno shout outs to him. People have been on him. He had a pretty good game today. Uh, let's go to the other side of the ball, the Carolina Panthers defense. Now, I know that that is the part of the ball that has the most injuries and you have so many guys that were out, they're missing five starters right now on the defensive side of the ball. However, they still are 31st in the league in points allowed. Only the Denver Broncos are worse than the Carolina Panthers and that's the team that gave up 70 to the Miami Dolphins. So I guess it's a win that the Carolina Panthers didn't give up 70 to the Dolphins because it is possible. But that's something that they're going to have to work on. They have to figure out how to stop teams and, and also when the offense gives up the ball, they're gonna have to learn how to keep teams to three instead of letting those turnovers turn into downs, uh, for them. I know that that's not the defense's fault, but that's something that they're going to really have to work on and Brian Burns we're looking for, you right. We want him to have a little bit more of a push that defensive line is not putting any pressure on any of the quarterbacks that they face so far. And that's one thing that's not helping out the secondary when you go against guys like Tyreek Hill, Jalen Watto, who can absolutely burn you. So, uh, I hope that the defense can really, uh, look at that, really figure that out, get some push up front and also learn how to keep teams out of the box because the Panthers are known for their defense and I know that, um, so many Panthers greats would, are embarrassed that their team is 31st in the league in allowing teams to score points. That's just not good enough. Well, they've got two weeks to try to right the ship in some sort of way. They'll be back home October 29th against the Texans and that's what we'll pick it up with you, Chris. Thank you so much.
