Charlotte, N.C. — There's expected to be the normal frenzy when NBA free agency begins on Sunday. One of the free agents at the top of the list is Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting Walker is on the wish list for more than just the Hornets. The Boston Celtics covet the guard and would make a move for him should Kyrie Irving leave in free agency for another team.
Walker had an All-Star 2018-19 season, averaging 25.6 points per game. He was chosen for the first time as an NBA All-Star Game starter. He has spent his entire eight-year career with the Hornets after leading the Connecticut Huskies to the 2011 national championship.
Shams Charania of The Atlantic said Walker and the Hornets are far apart in negotiations. That leaves the door open not only for the Celtics but for teams such as the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.
The Los Angeles Lakers also made a trade with the Washington Wizards on Thursday to clear up more cap space after acquiring Anthony Davis in a trade that sent players -- including Kinston (N.C.) native Brandon Ingram -- to the New Orleans Hornets. That could get the Lakers in the mix, too.
