Love: I watch the three-pointer vs. Duke in the Final Four 'almost every day'
The UNC guard discusses his decision to return to play for the Tar Heels for another year and why this season is 'championship or bust.'
um I'll play you being able to come back for 30 years and I know that there's unfinished business, but I also ask a little bit to do with, I don't I don't really think will play the part into it. Um I feel like, you know, I just wanted to win a national championship um was the main reason and you know, meet us coming back is the main reason why we we wanted to do that. Why not go out on top. Armando said that I think you're really the only one that really considered truly going to the N. B. A. What was that process like for you? How long did you have to think? Um Just in the summer we were kind of, everybody was waiting for that video. What was that like? It felt great dropping a video knowing I made the right decision, man. Yeah, it was it was tough, you know, going back and forth, which what decision to make and it was just tough, you know, just not trying to make the wrong decision. Um and I feel like me coming back will improve me as, as a person and as a player as a whole. Um and so I feel like if I come back and be more consistent, be more efficient. Um and do what I do what I gotta do to help this team win. Uh It'll be better for me in the long run. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like I said, it was tough and you know, I had great support, my mom, my dad coaches, um you know, mentors, everything, everybody played a part into it and uh they help me make make the right decision when it comes down to the expectations. Of course expectations will be a lot higher this year. Um but when you look at the team, of course, every year, the team is different. How what, how do you think your team right now is equipped to handle the regular season and postseason maybe in a way that wasn't equipped to handle it last year. I just feel like uh now we got a chip on our shoulder knowing we should have one uh in the championship and we know how close we were at winning. Um I feel like everybody, even the freshman freshman said they went through the same thing, we went through the hurt um as they were watching it. So they're coming in here with a chip on their shoulder. And so every day we're coming in here getting better and better and we look up, look up at the advantage and saying that's the next spot for us. It seems like it's on twitter like every two weeks ago, three weeks ago, three months ago, right? What's it been like to see that the shot won't go away and it just really sticks and it's crazy to even think about it. Uh and how much impact the whole world is crazy. But I look at it almost every day and just like I really did that. Like that's it's a blessing. It's you look at, you look back at it, like it took a lot of guts. Shoot that over a six, got a lot Next to the Jordan's shot in 82 to win a title. That's why the most recognizable. Yeah. Yes, sir. Yes. Like I said, It's, it's crazy even, you know, fathom, um, and wrap my head around it, but uh, it's history now. How do you guys plan on managing these expectations? Obviously last year, you guys kind of trade your way through the season and get the eight seed and nobody's expecting it this year, you're potentially going to be the number one team in the nation. How do you guys kind of manage those expectations? Yeah. I feel like we, we all know what, what, what we, you know, like coming in here for, we know this championship or bust. That's, that's what we're saying. Um, and that's what we're working towards every day. Um, and everybody want to talk about how, you know, we got a target on our back, We wouldn't want it any other way. That's how we want it. So, um, just us coming in, having that chip on our shoulder. Um, you know, not relaxing. Uh, yeah, we did that that, but, but last year's is last year. So it's a new year and like I said, we're coming in every day one working, working to get that championship. That's, Do you remember when you were a freshman and 2021 year old? What's it like this year, juniors and seniors, your old mature, it feels great, you know uh the freshman, you know, catching off pretty fast and um as you know, older older players were gonna come back with I. Q. And we're just trying to you know, Let the freshmen, you know, grasp it all. And so it feels good knowing that like we got a group full of guys that you know has been in those experiences? Yeah. He's kind of smarter than the than the 18 year old. Yeah. I felt that my freshman year, I want to ask the same thing that RJ but when you guys came in college, of course, covid huge. You guys didn't get a chance to really get together that summer a little bit more last summer this summer. Do you notice a difference in the way you guys are able to kind of as a team because it's less of a factor. And do you think that that will have a positive impact on the season? Yeah, for sure. I feel like it will have a positive impact. Um Just knowing that we, you know, we we have that and uh for sure it'll definitely have a great impact on us. What's the difference in the way you guys have been able to navigate that this year has been able to notice. Um I just feel like we all know that one goal that we want. Um It's established like it's been established since we lost. Uh, so just coming in here every day. Um not not slacking off on anything and uh we're coming in here like last year we probably would sometimes play around or something like that. It's all business every time we step on the court and uh we know what it takes to get there and we know what it takes to, we're about to know what it takes to win. This is kind of random in years down the line, but during the NBA free agency is your mind blown? Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah, I gotta go harder. That's what, that's what it's telling me. I gotta go, I gotta go hard, I gotta, you know, once when that time comes, that time will come. But uh yeah, saying that saying how much money they're giving out is, it's ridiculous Caleb what in practice has been like obviously a much deeper team. Um you know, I talk to Armando about or pete about what this team looks like. What, what do you guys look like so far, the young guys and you know, even talked about talked about potentially not having to play as much last year, what's that gonna look like? Yeah, I feel like everybody on this team can contribute contribute to us and I feel like it was just weird. I say deeper, we're deeper, so to speak. Um we got guys at every position, multiple guys at every position that can, you know, go out there and do do do well for us. And so I say that's probably the most, most of the changes is that we're deeper. If you talk to any other, I know a lot of times former Carolina guys come in over the summer, but with you guys being so close as close as you were, you talk to any of the former national champion inside like, you know, do this next time. Oh yeah, love. And feedback. Have you gotten from the former champion? Uh, you know, always like talk to theo all the time about it. Um, You know, just Justin Jackson, K will uh, all of those guys, I just talked to him and what does it feel like to, you know, lose and then go back and get it. Um, and they were telling me, you know, it's, it's right there. Um, and how they came in number one. everything everybody expected this expected that, but they didn't worry about that. They expect that they put their their team goes ahead of, you know, their individual goals and they bought it as a team and they want it. So that's basically what they were telling me
