Glennon and Wilson being two very different style quarterbacks, I wonder if it was going to create too much of a problem gearing the offense to one style and then having to change at the last minute. Maybe that's why Glennon is the starter and Wilson could compete for it if he wished. I would not want to prepare for a season not knowing which style of offense I was going to run until the last minute.

From the Blue White Game Roster/Depth Chart
D-Line - Quinton Coples, Tadrique Powell, Donte Paige-Moss, Jordan Nix
Linebackers - Zach Brown, Herman Davidson, Kevin Reddick
Cornerbacks - Jabari Price and Charles Brown
Safetys - Johnathan Smith and Tre Boston

The Tarheels are loaded at D-Line. 2 first round draft choices next year IMHO.
Barth was still kicking off short. Feagles was punting longer but they were line drives so special teams better be able to cover.

Ok guys, moving on from this subject................

Since I'm not a UNC fan, will some UNC fan on here please give me an idea of the defensive starters for the Heels.

I think TOB wanted the situation over, Russell decided to leave, end of story!

    Have a nice day!

I'm not convinced we've seen the bottom yet.... I'd wait to see what the final word from the ncaa is, before making that statement.

Wilson is not holding up the progress of the team at all - the team has moved on without him. They are practicing and getting ready for next season with Glennon as their starter. As a matter of fact whatever team Wilson ends up on (IF he plays football) is moving on in the same mannner....they don't even know that Wilson will be in the mix.

And by the way you might want to compare overall records for Butch and TOB while at Carolina and State before you go professing who is in better shape.

Either TOB is a liar - saying Wilson would have been a back up all year long (not sure he said that) or he is a nut job who would have assigned one of the best players in State history to a back up role. Which one is it?

Try to avoid your spin here! lol

TOB is an honest man, TOB would have allowed Wilson back on the team - he said so, If TOB wanted Wilson to pick between football and baseball then he would have told Wilson - "you have made your decision - it is baseball - I am going to cut you loose from the football team". The DECISION to cut ties was Wilson's NOT TOB"s.

TOB has been more than fair with Wilson. Wilson made a choice to try baseball and that's fine, but you cannot hold up progress of the football team because Wilson may return. It's better for all involved to know exactly where they stand and that's what TOB did. Now there is no question where the team is going. That's forward as it should and Wilson can move forward with his career where ever it takes him. State's team should be better overall this year and will continue to dominate the local teams for years to come. Better coaching and overall better program than what's in Chapel Hill.

And out of the ones you mentioned, Bo was the only one with true star performance on each side, IMHO. Deon was ok as well as Jordan but no one had the superstar play like Bo. Bo Jackson was a absolute beast. His power and athletic ability were unreal.

Sounds like Russell only asked for his release because he wasn't even going to have an equal chance to COMPETE for the starting job.

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/wilson-torn-up-about-leaving-nc-stateThat tends to shoot down your theory that TOB was lying to Glennon.

Are you going to create a blog apologizing for that accusation? It seems pretty certain TOB was telling Glennon the truth. :)

I disagree with the assertion that Russell held anybody hostage. Might have to ask Dekook about that one. :)

(I only misspelled his name because his real name is offensive to the WRAL censors.)

But it's apparent that TOB didn't like Russell joining the team so late in the year now. And he wasn't willing to do that again, especially if it could cost us Glennon.

I think it was obvious that he wouldn't be a starter to begin with, but it seems that he was regulated to be a back up because he was not committed enough - I think he earned the right to make a decision whenever he decided....
I do not think TOB was sitting around wondering whether Wilson will be back...he was moving along and preparing without him...if he got the luxury of having Wilson back then he could have dealt with the situation. TOB is a very structured, hard nose marine...it may bite him this time.

One more thing...If Wilson plays for another school he would be much further behind than he would have at State....and I believe PLENTY of schools will be lining up to take a "chance" on him, don't you?

  • lmartin152 Apr 30, 2011

That's the only problem I have with multi-sport athletes - they're good enough to play both sports, but they can't give full time and attention to both. There aren't but so many Bo Jacksons, Brian Jordans, and Deion Sanders' to go around. Everybody, including the athlete in my opinion, would be best served for the athlete to just pick one.

I've heard nearly a consensus in the media that until Russell Wilson decides to be baseball 12 months a year, he won't stand much of a chance to make it to the majors. I don't take that as a slight of him or his talents, but he can't do the game of baseball justice training hard in baseball only 6-8 months out of the year.

I'm sure Wilson could have come back. TOB would have welcomed him with open arms. But he needed to come back now, not late in the fall. And it couldn't be a "wait and see" thing, either. I think that's why Russell requested and was granted a release. TOB was not willing to bring Russell back as a starter with little or no practice before the season began, nor was he willing to sit around wondering "IF" Russell was even coming back.

I have no problem with this. I would love Russell back as much as any State fan. But if he couldn't come back under the right terms, he really did need to just walk away from the program.

Many people are painting this as TOB having to make a choice, moving on, or sticking to his guns. Up to a day ago, TOB would have allowed Wilson to come back - so he wasn't painted into a corner or being held hostage.

It boils down to promising Glennon the starting job in order to keep him. The starting job was and still is Glennons'. If, as some profess on here this decision was made for team reasons, then I need to know how promising a starting job to someone helps a team? Every position should go to the best player and the player that earns it. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Glennon would have been the starter, however, if Wilson wanted to return he should have been given the opportunity to earn the starting job. If Glennon doesn't understand that competition for every position is the best for the team then HE is not a team player - he should WANT the best QB on the field - which he may be.

Wilson is undecided, but if he decides he wants to play football I think he will not lack for coaches calling him. Seeing Wilson in another uniform playing QB will be very weird.

I think this would have gone unnoticed if there hadn't been such strong language "needs to be committed, he made his choice" - plain and simple TOB should have said something like "Mike Glennon is our QB, Wilson is undecided at this point - if Wilson comes back we will welcome back on our team and he will have to compete just like everyone else for playing time"

TOB had to make a choice. I wrote after last football season, that Wilson needed to make a decision or Glennon would be gone to another school. State would have been in a jam without Glennon right now.

Agree with Centurian and TBK - I think Glennon needed to know he was THE GUY at QB, no looking over his shoulder. Wonder if Coach O'Brien spoke to Russell and gave him, maybe not an ultimatum, but the "choice" to "quit or be fired", for lack of a better term. I saw someone a while back on another thread make a comparison to Favre; I realize it's different situations, but the whole "indecisive", "maybe I will, maybe I won't" would get kind of old in the pros, but it would be much harder to cover that in college. Maybe Coach O'Brien just decided to cut bait rather than fish?

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again02 Apr 30, 2011

I don't think TOB had a choice. If he leaves the door open to Russell, he quite possibly loses Glennon AND Russell, if he doesn't return.

Honestly, RW is not very impressive in his early going as a single-A pro baseball player and his QB size and style is not well suited to NFL standards. As a pro, he might attain mediocrity in either sport and he also may not make it in either sport.

That being said, his QB game was extremely well suited for college FB and he was a great assest to NCSU making them a much better team when he played. However, I can thoroughly understand Coach O'Brien and his decision. Glennon is a top rated blue chip QB and it's his time to step up for the WolfPack.

If RW's baseball career is not looking good at the end of this summer season, then he can play FB somewhere for one more year, while State can move along with their season. It's probably good for everyone.

Russell Wilson was (1) a credit to NC State University, a great ambassador for the school and football program; and (2) not irreplaceable. He made a lot of good things happen from the QB position, but he also made a lot of suspect/bad decisions which cost NC State several ballgames last year.

The fact that Tom O'Brien felt like the team needs to know who its quaterback is before July is not that big a deal. It's not like they are losing Phillip Rivers or anything close. Nice quaterback, great person, good career, time to move on.

RW actually dropped about 20 points in his qb rating from 2009 to 2010. He will not play dangerous like he did his 1st 2 seasons because he has a mlb contract to protect. I wish him all the luck in the world on his future career in baseball. It is his true passion.

^the beauty of building a strong TEAM is that you lessen the over-reliance on one player, and spread the responsibility among the TEAM....Glennon might just make everyone forget about RW, he definitely will have a stronger cast assembled....RW made up for o-line shortcomings with his unique abilities....i remember quite a few posters downing RW for only having one winning season at NCSU....guess what changed in his last season???..was it that RW just plain got better??..no, he threw far more INT's last yr than he had thrown before...the TEAM got better....aamof, RW INT's played a role in 3 of the 4 losses NCSU had last yr.....3 INT's against vatech, including one in the endzone, INT in the endzone of ot against ecu(when a td and xp would have won the game), INT in endzone against clemson(lost by 1 pt)...even threw an INT against md(although the D lost that game)

I get it, TOB made it clear on media day that IF Russell Wilsion came back he would be a back up. Russell Wilson is not sure if he is going to play football again but decided IF he was to return he didn't want to be a back up.
He asked for a release and it was granted. Let's make this clear, this is not about Wilson holding NC State hostage, it is not about "moving on" or TOB "sticking to his guns" - Russell Wilson would have been accepted back to NC State by TOB IF he decided to play football.
If this wasn't about Russell Wilson, no one would bat an eye. However, it is about Russell Wilson, the consumate "everything" at NC State, one of the best QB's ever, a 100% guy, a model student and citizen, an all around nice guy. It is hard for opposing fans to not like Russell Wilson - many openly profess their respect for him. Russell Wilson has EARNED the right to make a late decision on football. He honestly does not know whether he will play football in the fall. Greg Paulus made a decision in mid May last year to play football at the D-1 level after being out of football for 4 years! No one is saying Paulus is anywhere near the QB Wilson is - but if Paulus can get ready for the season in a few months, then Wilson can get ready in a few hours, especially if he returned to NC State.

The goal of any coach should be to put the best team on the field/court (see Coach K's decision to play Kyrie Irving) and if Russell Wilson had decided to come back to NC State he would have played (maybe not right away) - because he is the BEST QB on the team. If Russell Wilson makes a late July decision to play football and does well AND Mike Glennon doesn't do well, DUCK because it will get ugly in Raleigh. No one knows for sure how this will play out, however, TOB's inability to be flexible may very well come back and haunt him.
