No. 7 Duke falls to Pitt on Sunday

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – No. 7 Duke (26-10, 11-7 ACC) fell to Pittsburgh, 11-10, in the series finale at Charles L. Cost Field on Sunday.

The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 after the first inning, before junior Devin Obee hit a towering solo home run to center field. The Panthers responded with a handful of runs of their own, before Duke was able to score four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead.

Pitt continued to battle back, scoring one run in the sixth, three in the seventh and three in the eighth to take the lead. The Blue Devils had the tying runner at third base in the ninth, but were unable to push him across.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Pitt opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, 1-0.
  • Devin Obee hit a solo home run to tie the ballgame in the top of the fourth inning, 1-1. 
  • Pitt regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, 4-1.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Alex Stone hit a double off the wall in left to score AJ Gracia from second. Obee hit a three-run home run to center field, 5-4.
  • Kyle Johnson hit a solo home run to right center field in the top of the sixth inning. Alex Stone doubled to right center field to score a pair. Wallace Clark tripled to right field to score Stone from second, 9-4.
  • Pitt cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, 9-5.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Zac Morris doubled to the gap in right center field, 10-5.
  • Pitt cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, 10-8.
  • The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, 11-10.

NOTES

  • Despite the loss on Sunday, Duke clinched its first series victory in Pittsburgh, Pa. with Saturday's double header sweep.
  • Junior Devin Obee hit his seventh and eighth home runs in Sunday's contest. The first tied the ballgame, while the second, a three-run home run, gave Duke its first lead of the day.
  • Freshman Kyle Johnson hit his first career home run against Pitt, a solo shot to right center field.
  • Sunday marked the first time this season that Duke had fallen in a game when scoring 10-plus runs. They were 11-0 and 4-0 in the ACC.

Duke heads home for a quick midweek matchup against Gardner-Webb at Jack Coombs Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
