The search for a new general manager is over. The Carolina Panthers will hire internally, promoting assistant general manager Dan Morgan to president of football operations/general manger. The move was announced on Monday evening.

Dan Morgan's Resume

While a player first, Morgan started his NFL front office career as an intern with the Seattle Seahwaks in 2010. In his second season, Morgan was named the assistant director of pro personnel and maintained that position through 2014, which includes the Seahawks 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. In 2015, he was promoted to director of pro personnel, and according to the Panthers' website, "was responsible for guiding the pro and advance scouting efforts for the club."

From 2018-2020 Morgan moved to the AFC, working as the director of player personnel for the Buffalo Bills. The team made the playoffs twice in those three years, including a trip to the AFC Championship game in 2020.

Morgan joined the front office in Charlotte as the team's assistant general manager in 2021.

"Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go," Panthers owner David Tepper said. "We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player."

Dan Morgan the player

Dan Morgan is better known as a player for the Carolina Panthers than as a member of the front office. Morgan was drafted 11th overall by the Panthers in the 2001 NFL Draft out of the the University of Miami (Fla.). His college career included a Nagurski Trophy, the Butkus Award and the Bednarik Award, All-American honors, and a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame class of 2021.

Morgan played for seven seasons with Carolina, from 2001-2007. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2004 after registering 102 tackles. In Super Bowl XXXVIII later that season, Morgan notched 25 tackles which is a Super Bowl record and a franchise postseason record.

The Panthers fired previous general manager Scott Fitterer earlier this year. Carolina fished the season with an NFL-worst 2-15 record, but because of the trade last offseason for the No. 1 pick, the Panthers will be without its first round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
