If someone keeps referring to themselves as a lawyer and are always explaining the law, you would think that they would have a very lucrative career as an attorney but instead settle for being a talk show host - kind of speaks to their ability as a lawyer
— Posted by Maxwell Silver IIISpeaks to his self confidence as well. If he really had any, he wouldn't have to remind everyone on a DAILY basis that he "covered the ACC for 30 years" (which means he started when he was 18, making that statement BS), how he owned his own business, how his radio show is the only state-wide sports show, his "lovely and talented" wife, being a lawyer, yadda, yadda. He mentioned last week that Hayes Purmar (spelling) is leaving. Too bad - Hayes does a terrific job and seems very down to earth. I'll miss him - not that he got much air time with that inflated ego he works for.

was at the spring football game at State saturday- love April spring is in the air and spring games signifies football is around the corner, this is the lull season but can easily be filled, playing golf
going to the Preakness this year, first time ever to a major horse race (emptying my bucket) love this time at the beach, summer will move along fast and then its time for some Football. Always take a trip this time of year just a drive across parts of the country.
— Posted by Maxwell Silver IIISounds like a plan, Max!
Thinking of going to Carolina's spring practice today - the weather is perfect. I don't want to wish my life away, but I like it when football starts up. Panthers play the Broncos on opening day of the NFL season! Panthers play five games in prime time this season! -

I honestly believe next year with DS cat would be better, with Henderson and Smith they won't be able to key on him but when he goes thru the process and he is told that he will at least a middle 2nd rounder, I say go guaranteed 7 figures would be hard to turn down, I would take it.

yea I hear there is a possibility would like to see Cat play a team that has only seen him on tape-yesterday was a good outing may have been his last-if he is a mid 2nd rounder, I would come back Sadam Gold says he can't improve himself with another year-you know Gold would be a great GM, Manager, Head coach surprised he has not gotten many offers, why don't the Canes hire him in front office- but I have seen Cat improve each year and believe he would ever greater next year but it may never happen. just my 2 cents
— Posted by Maxwell Silver IIII know what you mean about Gold! I can understand that Cat's stock is so high now, and with State bringing in more talent next year, Cat won't get the same minutes and his numbers won't be what they are this year, most likely. This is a weak draft class, so Cat may go higher this year than next. At least with the new rules, he can test the NBA waters and decide to return to State if he doesn't like what he hears. The compelling factors for Cat leaving are supporting his daughter and also getting his mother into a better environment; things you have to respect. He may have even worked his way up to the first round - yesterday's game was an amazing display of Cat's talents. We can all hope he does what's best for him and his family.

Wow - interesting about Sanguinetti. He bounced around a lot - shows how hard it is to land with a team and play for them, and not be shipped to their AHL affiliate. I'm still laughing at the mental image of your group terrifying the old pharts trying to get in a round of golf on the same course!

Yep.....sometimes fans act like it's so easy to play pro ball. Takes skill obviously, but you have to be extremely lucky and hope you find the right fit. Thousands and thousands of players but just a few teams to go around. Once saw a stat re: MLB players drafted and 94 to 96 percent of 'em never make it to the Bigs for a day. Puts it in perspective.

Erik Cole was one of my all time favorite Canes. I remember reading that he tried to make the team several times before he actually did, and how hard it was on him when he didn't make it. He'd go back home absolutely crushed.
To make it in the majors you have to be an elite athlete, and like you said, also have some luck. I can't imagine doing anything that well. That's an incredible stat that you gave about the baseball players that actually make it to the Big Show. The Pro athletes have God-given talent that 99.9% of the population wishes they had, which is why it's so mind blowing when some throw it all away. But those that appreciate what they have, give back to the community and mentor the young players, well, those guys are one of the things that keep me watching. Saw Bo Jackson last week on ESPN. I caught the 30 for 30 about him - it was done so well and gave me more appreciation for him as a man and athlete.

Funny you should mention Erik Cole, Gunny. A friend of ours married his sister. Small world! I remember when he suffered his neck injury. They were concerned he wouldn't play again. Just a very casual hockey fan, but always pulled for Erik Cole while he was here. Good dude from what I was told.
:)
Saw a more updated MLB stat that puts the number at around 10% who make it (just for 1 game), but still a very low number. When you have a fail rate of 90%, it helps to keep things in perspective.
Bo Jackson - hated to see his career cut short. He's the best athlete I've ever seen. Could have been a HOF'er in football or baseball. He had that kind of talent. Bo knew football, baseball, etc., but Bo didn't know hockey. lol
— Posted by DIAMONDBISHOPThat IS a small world, B! Cole kept his house in Raleigh, even when he was playing in Montreal, Dallas, and Detroit, so I think he'll retire here. He seemed so down to earth, and was beyond thrilled when they won the Cup. He went through hell with his neck injury, and said he had pain every day as a result of that DIRTY hit by Bruce Orpik. Not that I hold a grudge:)

Peyton retired as expected. Nothing to prove at this point. One of the all-time greats.

Gunny, the guy I was playing with that day had a nephew who eventually played for the 'Canes...Bobby Sanguinetti. With you being a big 'Canes fan, figured you'd enjoy that one. The golf course was unsafe for the others that day. Not sure how his ball missed them, but it sounded like an explosion when it hit their cart. I remember them trying to run away....looked like little ducklings waddling away. We felt bad for 'em...just glad they didn't get hurt.

Not a big golfer either but I'll share a story with ya. Several years ago, me and a baseball buddy played a round at a local course. Three seniors teed up before us, but told us to play ahead after they all went. They were less than a 100 yards from us on the left, & huddled by some pines. My buddy was a big dude/righty, looks at me & says, "Just hope I don't hit it at 'em." I told him there was no pressure because he was a good golfer...not!!
He rips a liner right at 'em, it hits their cart, and shoots into the fairway. He runs down & apologizes over and over, and I chuckled as this was going on. Hole #2, we're hitting in the opposite direction. With me being a lefty, I was concerned I would pull it at 'em since they were still on hole #1. My teammate tells me I'm up and says, "Try not to hit the seniors!" We laughed a little, I swung, & hit it right at 'em. They go & get the course manager who tells us to move along in a hurry....lol

Played # 2 wouldn't call it a pretty course, the fairways were immaculate, it was almost like walking on carpet, greens had a lot bumps, first time I played, the first hole I had a hard time getting my ball to stay on the green, the most enjoyable courses Legacy, Pit and Pine Needles.

I believe this weekend and ACC tour. will shake up some things nationally, any of the top 8-10 team could move up or down , only thing for sure is wake and state play next week. The winner of Duke/UNC could move up, the loser should they go out early in ACC could drop 3-4 spots-
Nationally the chess board will be set up this weekend, next week (tournament week) is when the pieces start moving around. -

trying to predict NCAA seeds:probably way off but here goes
east:1-Villonova 2-UNC 3-Indiana 4-Maryland----- west 1-Mich St. 2-Oklahoma 3-utah 4-Arizona
south: 1-Virginia 2-Xavier 3-West Va. 4-Iowa midwest1-Kansas 2-Miami 3-Oregon 4-Duke
Top 4 1- Kansas 2- Mich St.3- Virginia 4- Villonova
the national guys (Palm, Lunardi) predict the bracketology each year - they update every 24 to 48 hours- I will update after ACC tour.
would like imput from others-
can't wait for the opening weekend of NCAA tournament
— Posted by Maxwell Silver IIII agree about MSU and Kansas being 1-seeds, and maybe UVA as well. I think Duke will be at least a 3, maybe even a 2 if they beat Carolina on Saturday (and I think they will, unfortunately), as well as make a good showing in the ACCT, which K places a lot of importance on. My gut tells me Carolina may drop to a 3 seed. I don't know about the other teams yet - the ACC has been erratic as usual, let alone what's going on in the other conferences. Love this time of year, but hate that it will be over in one short month.

Max I have a baseball swing. LOL. Love to watch the game, but never really was serious about playing. Worked at Longleaf during the summer, and grew up about a block from Mid Pines.
— Posted by Toddler10-21Golf ain't that hard, T. Hit it in the fairway, drop it on the green, and put it in. How hard can it be? lol
I can crush a golf ball, just don't know where it's going (baseball swing). Generally, I start yelling fore as I start my swing. Takes a lot of practice like anything else. :-) -

waiting for the NCSU-Syracuse saturday to come on- the previous game Georgetown/Butler went into overtime-thought they would put State game 5.2, turn over and they were showing GT/Butler on both channels-couldn't understand why they didn't have the local game on at one- ???
— Posted by GUNNY III
I watched the 'Cuse/State game in its entirety. I have TWC maybe you have dish? State played tough but Gbinije found another gear in that game. He won it for Syracuse. Watching the Carolina/Cuse game now. Sloppy game. I think Roy and Boeheim are both disgusted.

Hey Gunny. Agree about paying all that $$$ for cable. I'd ditch cable if it wasn't for sports. Also agree about WRAL switching to the peacoock (censors) - don't like it at all. Don't watch NBC except for Olympics and Sunday night FB if it's a good game. Like Blue Bloods as well. Have a good one. Gunny!

One thing about Rowan is that he tries to me to do things that he isn't good at like driving to the basket. Just stick to taking your outside shots. Mav just watch Scoot wood tapes and you will be fine. I thought Abdu would be a monster this year, but hasn't been consistent. Twins play hard, but will get better throughout the years. Miss Lacy and Washington big time. Dennis Smith is the real deal. Go Pack!!
— Posted by Toddler10-21
Heard Smith was the #1 PG in his class. Huge get for the Pack. Rowan should still be in HS, so some bad decisions are understandable. He'll be a better player next year from his playing time this year. Scott Wood was a stud. Remember his FT streak? I saw a piece WRAL did on him in the practice gym. He hit shots while riding an exercise bike, from upstairs, and made other unreal shots. Kid was s great shooter.
Abu has been good in most games. I'm more surprised at Anya's play - thought he'd be better. Twins are good but inconsistent. State will be better next year. Don't see Cat coming back.
— Posted by StunGunnI agree Rowan will be better next could be as good as Scott Wood, he will learn his limitation , the Martin have progressed a lot will be better next year.
With Henderson coming back, kid from Charlotte and Smith look for the Pack to be better.
I grew up Robeson and Cumberland area, talked to a lot of people that say Dennis Smith is a class kid.

If someone keeps referring to themselves as a lawyer and are always explaining the law, you would think that they would have a very lucrative career as an attorney but instead settle for being a talk show host - kind of speaks to their ability as a lawyer

Speaks to his self confidence as well.
