Bilas was at it again, saying NCAA needs to stay out of academics- people get a little popular and they start to think they have all the answers-

with college basketball gone, it looks like Bilas has gone into hibernation but don't worry he will be back spouting out he same out bull he recycles each year- other notes 21 triangle players will have an a chance to further their football careers.

All the guys at espn either are told or do it on their own pump up their people.
— Posted by Maxwell Silver IIIThat's why I like Mike & Mike - they take jabs at each other every day. They're polar opposites, and it works. Wonder who ESPN will find to take the place of Skip Brainless, now that he's leaving for greener ($$$$) pastures over at Fox.

Yes I remember Robinson. Broughton has had some great players. I remember Gary Mattison during the late 80's and later played at Saint Aug's when I was there. Man could he light it up. Led division two in scoring during those years. Poor guy has been in and out of trouble for years.
— Posted by Toddler10-21Hate to hear about guys getting in trouble after their playing days are over; like you said earlier - be ready for when the ball stops bouncing.
Hope the Hornets win at least one game against the Heat - very demoralizing to be swept in the first round, especially considering how long they go between making the playoffs. -

Shav was one of the best to very play in NC. I think K needed him to rebound and play defense more than score because they had Dunleavy, Williams, Boozer etc for that. Shav and Pistol are legends at Broughton.
— Posted by Toddler10-21Oh yes they are legends! I remember Broughton being jam packed when Shav played. They even had smoke when he came out of the tunnel. Never saw that at any other high school.
Do you know Coach Robinson? When he was at Leesville, they had some good teams. Shawan Robinson was on the team. He went on to play for Larry Shayatt at Clemson. I watched him torch my Heels with his 3's one time. Some of the guys on that team played football and basketball. Good old days! -

Yeah, but If you are good the big time schools will find you. Another thing, 4 and 5 star players enroll in prep schools/Private schools and its takes away from growing up and attending your neighborhood schools. Remember Donald Williams - Garner, Rodney Rogers - Hillside, Shavlick Randolph - Broughton, Eric Williams - Wake Forest, Danny Young, Nate Mcmillian, PJ Tucker, Leville Moton - Enloe, PJ Hairston, Brendon Haywood - Dudley, Jeff Capel - South View, David Thompson Shelby, Sleepy Floyd, James Worthy - Gastonia, John Wall, CJ Leslie, Dez Wells - Word of God etc....
— Posted by Toddler10-21Wow, T - a walk down memory lane! Hate to see kids playing for Prep schools instead of their local schools. What a treat to see those special players playing in the public schools. I remember Shavlock playing for Broughton. My girls went to Leesville, and at the time Broughton was a big rival. He had such a soft touch with the ball. His injuries really hampered his play at Duke. Seemed like a real good kid.

The AAU coaches remind me of the guys at a rec center trying to relive his glory days with younger kids(his glory was making a shot in a rec game) not saying all but most give me that impression- they talk to the parents about their son being the next great thing.
I hear sports announcers, media talk show no it alls-say they need to shorten the game, cut out some of the commercials that will shorten it but that ain't gonna happen so lets just live with it. As we all have grown to see most tv, radio shows about sports has to always be complaining about something, they need to change this, leave the game alone play it as intended. -

I never bought into that AAU stuff anyway, but every kid that plays basketball their parents sign them up. They travel the country to compete, but I'm a believer in there is competition right in your backyard. takes up a lot of time and money.
Read a quote from Greg Jackson Leville Moton's college coach, " One day the ball will stop bouncing so be prepared"
— Posted by Toddler10-21So true about being prepared for when the ball stops bouncing!
T - I agree there's competition in your back yard, but the kids get noticed in AAU.
Good luck to all the players testing the Draft. Hope they all get accurate information so they can make the best decision. -

was in a restaurant a few days ago and a man was sitting in the booth next to me, he was constantly on the phone, was using expletives and a demeaning tone to whoever was on the other end one of the girls working there came over and greeted him started a conversation and casually mention that he coached AAU ball in the area, I just listened and his whole attitude make me wonder why do parents let their kids play for people like this but like I said earlier visions of greatness are put in their heads, once he sees the kid is average at best he will drop like a hot potato, love to go to places and just listen, it can very educational, like the old saying going you have 2 ears and only one mouth.

The Dixie Classic I remember it was played about 8-9 maybe 10 years and I believe nobody outside of the big four won it-this area when Case came down was more about football than basketball-but he put State first and then triangle area on the map-the ACC was the premier tournament and dixie classic was the premier holiday basketball tournament, remember someone saying a ticket back then to the D.C. was tougher than the ACC tour.
— Posted by Maxwell Silver III
Things seemed more innocent back then, even though the Dixie Classic was abolished due to point shaving. Today's college b ball seems so corrupt (and I'm not talking about the "stuff" at Carolina), I'm talking about the big picture, the sausage factory college ball has become. It's all about the $$$. Really enjoy reading about the "good old days" here, not that they were perfect and entirely innocent. The next book I read is definitely going to be "The Legends Club". There's so much basketball history in the Triangle, and it's fascinating to me.

Good points about the AAU and ESPN. Agree it's wrong for universities to allow kids who are unqualified to enroll in school. The problem begins long before college, though. The "no child left behind" program had good intentions, but its has resulted in kids being pushed along, despite not being able to do the work. Teaching athletes a trade as well as how to function in the real world would be an improvement. One big problem: the athletes have to be willing to do the work, and many are not.
— Posted by StunGunnwith the vision of teaching a trade (ones that may not be ready for college) mainly talking about a lot the 3 and 4 star athletes that pro's are not gonna be in their future- some 4 stars and most 5 stars have been told their entire life they are gonna be in the NBA and have pushed them thru Jr. high and High school - the people telling this are looking for a pay day down the road (remember Johnny I was there for you back in the 8th grade) hopefully some of these other players are looking at this as a stepping stone in the real world. Bilas and all these guys telling these players colleges should be paying them only will make them think they are owed, smart one realize the value of an education and maybe some of those not ready for college would be able learn a trade to help them as they travel life's road.

I'm not into golf, and I'm always a little sad when I see commercials for The Masters, only because it signifies the official end of college b ball.
That must have been a thrill to play at Pinehurst! I guess they have to keep stringent rules in place to keep the greens pristine. You must have some good memories, Max. -

guess everything is winding down after tournament was over--went to Masters Practice round
place was immaculate, remember years ago when i played Pinehurst #2, you couldn't leave cart path you had walk out to your ball on the fairways, I felt I should wipe feet before I went onto the fairway it was so plush-I was either listening or watching it yesterday-it was epic. Jordan Speith I think is probably a good kid, he was starting to get cocky, glad to see him knocked down a peg believe it will help him in the long run. The radio guys were ready to annoint him as the next Jack or Arnie, now they are ready tear him down. -

— Posted by StunGunnI think the involvement of AAU has help corrupt the structure of college BB, these kids now a days come in demanding playing time, thinking I will be the next NBA great thing-the AAU coaches are feeding them info they want to hear- the evolvement of ESPN has not helped-lot of the talking heads of sports media are telling how they are taking advantage, well when that 90% that don't make it to the next level-they find out how valuable a diploma will be- the really disgrace is when a college lets fall between the cracks and not get an education-if a kid doesn't have the tools the compete in the class room it is a travesty to keep passing him on down the line, maybe university should involve a program that teaches a trade, you have heard of the basketweaving courses, what would be problem in having curriculum that teaches these kids something that can fall back on.

ACC used to have a lot of charactor- Lefty, Bones, Lou Bello was an official in the days of the ACC
Bones always told the story about Lou during a State/Wake game Bones didn't like a call that was made and ask Lou what the heck is going on Lou---Bello replied back we got ya by 5. Bill Curry later became the play-play man for UNC, left to go to work in Pittsburgh replaced by Woody Durham. -

I like Nance as well. I used to consider Bilas one of the best, but he's become very opinionated, and always thinks he's right. Bilas is very bright, and I still like him, but I wish he'd stick more to the game being played. A lot of the color analysts seem to discuss things other than the game that's going on. I want to hear strategy, who just got called for the foul, etc. Things like that. Discussions about paying players (a subject near and dear to Jay's heart) can be done at another time. Bilas isn't the only one getting chatty during a game; a lot of color analysts seem to be doing it. I don't think that will be the case for the next three games, though!
