I think UNC will end up 6-6 they will beat Cal Saturday, possibly with an upset or two could be even better, they make a bowl for sure.
Duke and Wake will struggle especially Duke 3 or 4 wins is probably the ceiling for Duke, Wake possibly could go 5 win but you never know -upsets happen a lot with these two.
State has the potential to be Doeran best team, with predictions all over the place, if defense plays to potential it could be special-we will see-tomorrow is critical to their season.

Carolina has a recent history of losing its opening game, even when they have a very good season, as they did back in 2015, when they won 11 games. They're a slight favorite in tomorrow's game, buy my gut tells me they won't win. It's a home game, and Cal has a long commute, but I don't have a good feeling about the game. They lost so much talent on offense.
Duke won't be good, but they do have a good QB, and of course, Coach Cut. Wake might squeak into a bowl.
State is clearly the best team in NC this year. I can see them winning nine games, including tomorrow's game.

a 6 or 7 year tour is about the avg for the Pack since Earle Edwards was coach for 17 years-Lou Holtz and Bo Rein had successful 4 year runs, then unsuccessful for 3 years for Monte Kiffen and the General Tom Reed, Sheridan 7 years well liked and successful just opposite for Mike O'Cain in 7 years, Chuck was a fan favorite but it went down as success dwindled after 7 years, Tom O'Brien had mild success in 6 years-Doeren is in Year 5 --just saying -2 cents

I see your points, Max, but this is a loaded State team, and their schedule isn't as challenging as it was last year. I'm not penciling in State to make the playoffs, but I do think they'll have the best year they've had in a long time. They may lose a lot to the NFL after this season, so next year may be a return to mediocrity.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 8, 2017

I think people were blaming Doeren for the loss last week, fumbles by normally reliable players, the run back happens to everyone, 1st game mistakes happen just hope they can be corrected- we will see!!!!!

  • StunGunn Sep 9, 2017
    Sports Legend

The easiest thing to do is blame the coach, especially one who was on the hot seat last year. Doeren bought himself time when he beat Carolina and won the bowl game. State definitely let one slip away last week, but blaming Doeren alone is short sighted. Like you said, first game of the season, and it was on a big stage. The guys saw their mistakes, and they'll be corrected.

better QB for UNC is the freshman, more experience is Harris balancing the two to get the freshman some reps, eventually will take over and getting him ready for next year, take your lumps this year and gain experience

the QB situation at State is in good hands with Finley for the next two years, when he leaves and they go to another transfer could hurt QB recruiting in the next few years, hopefully Devin Leary will come in and be the next QB

after Marshall got stopped on their first drive and Pack march down had to settle for a field goal, Marshall got their offense moving with superman effort from an outstanding receiver, That was sluggish thru out most of the first half but had to two terrific drives to close it out. If you would have told me with Marshall leading 20-10 State would have the lead at the end of the half i Probably would laughed. The second offense continued with an opening drive and the defense stepped up. During the S.C. and Marshall I have seen how dynamic this offense can but it does get sluggish at times, the defense it stout but the corners have got to improve, it is gonna an interesting year which I hope turns out to be a great one!! My 2 cents

didn't see the Louisville-UNC game but without Jackson Louisville can be at best an average team but with Jackson they will be hard to beat, don't try to stop him just contain him, UNC put up 34 point which will win most games.

Max - I was stunned at how well Duke did against Northwestern. This was said to be a "defining" game on what direction Duke would be going in. Good news for Duke, bad news for Carolina. I actually saw some good things in the Carolina/L'Ville game yesterday. Harris did a lot better than he did last week, filling in for Surratt, after he left with some kind of injury. Carolina held their own for a while, and led through part of the game. Jackson did better with his legs, and some of his throws were way off mark. That said, Jackson had some pretty gaudy numbers in the game for sure. Carolina gave up big plays again, and until their D steps up, it's going to be hard for them to win games. This is going to be a bad year for the Heels. I can accept some of it, considering who they lost on the offensive side of the ball, but even if Trubisky & Co. were still playing on Saturdays, you won't win games without playing D. I was also stunned when I saw that Marshall was beating State.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 10, 2017

not sure if its more about Duke or Northwestern, could Duke contend for Coastal probably not but it has to say a lot about Cutt, I remember at one time Cutt was being talked about for the State job, who knows if he would have been successful.

i have heard several people say Jackson better enjoy it in college and get a degree, he is a college QB that will not translate to the Pro's, great receivers will make avg or below avg QB's look good, I think he is in that category, if you let him he will beat you with his legs

I really don't follow college football that close, especially around here, but win 6 is the main goal and I can see UNC/Duke/Wake and State doing just that. Always will be basketball country.

growing up Basketball was the thing, football an afterthought, in 1983 I had been to 3 or 4 football games. I moved to Raleigh in 83 started going football games and haven't missed a home game since, I still love basketball but football is my passion on satudays it is an event.
get there early set up, start tailgating, watch the game then finish tailgating it is an all day event.

T - I wish I had your optimism about the Big Four winning at least 6 games. Carolina will not win 6 games unless there's a sudden improvement in their defense. There is no D in UNC. their QB situation isn't bad, with both Harris and Surratt showing some good potential. The Heels have a more difficult schedule this year, so I see them winning 4 games. Maybe. Duke is looking better than expected, and Daniel Jones is a very good QB. State hasn't played up to their talent level yet, but I see them winning at least 9 games. Not sure about Wake.
I'm good with the ACC being thought of as a basketball conference, but I'm also glad we have Clemson to do the heavy lifting in football by winning the Natty last year, and looking good this year. FSU really took a hit losing their QB for the year in the very first game of the season.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 13, 2017

I thought the pack game against USC would give a look at how well the Pack will do, the defense did great holding them to less than 300 yards, the Offense played good, looked unstoppable at times, the secondary play has to improve a lot. Again against Marshall the secondary was torched albeit by a great receiver having an extraordinary game. With FSU new QB only having played one game between the State game hopefully will help the Pack. Louisville can be beaten, Jackson's strong part is not his passing should help the Pack, those two could determined if Pack is 5-1 or 3-3 or maybe 2-4

  • StunGunn Sep 14, 2017
    Sports Legend

FSU losing their starting QB definitely helps the Pack's cause, Max. L'Ville will be a tougher match than FSU. Clemson is still the team to beat in the ACC. Was listening to Mike&Mike this morning, and Mile Golick said what you said about Jackson: good college QB, but he can't count on using his legs alone in the NFL. Unless he can play in the pocket, he'll be torched when he plays in the Pros. Will be interesting to see where's he's taken when he does go Pro.
I can't believe ESPN is dismantling Mike&Mike. It's been successful for 18 years, and I can't imagine any replacement show being as good. The new show will have Trey Wingo and Mike and Mike Jr. Not going to be as good IMHO.

Very impressed with the Indians winning streak especially without Miller who in my opinion is the best closer in baseball.
Mike & Mike was successful. I really like Golic and his son. Greeney just thought he knew everything. I don't like Jemelle and whoever her partner is either. They just seem to flirty to me. Don't let me get started on Undisputed with that darn Skippy Bayless. dude his bias. Its all about the cowgirsl, brady, manzell, tebow and hate Lebron, Aaron Rogers and Luck. Agree about the Indians, T. Not a fan, but would love to see them back in the WS and win it this time. No one will remember their win streak if they don't win it all, just like GS Warriors.

Greeny is so opposite of Golic, it's entertaining. I doubt they're friends off air - too different. Golic eats things off the floor, played in the NFL, while Greeny eats a sandwich with a knife and fork, and was captain of the debate club. I like them together much better than apart, but ESPN is trying to change things up and remain relevant. I don't think the new show will work, and I like Mike Jr. as well. Hard working guy - does radio in the middle of the night, and will fill in during the day on TV whenever he can. Sure, Mike Senior may have paved the way, but Junior works his tail off and is always very well prepared.

Will do predictions tomorrow, but gotta feel for ECU facing Va Tech this Saturday!

would love to see Indians go all the way, got a soft spot for Cleveland, all the comedians make fun of it but every city has flaws, never been to Cleveland but would love to. Was in Atlanta for game 6 WS in 95, sat in the upper deck, was a 1-0 Atlanta win for the WS, a guy sitting in our row passed a few baseballs down our isle wanted everybody to sign it, said he promised some friends an autographed ball, thought it was funny-so somewhere in Cleveland there is a baseball with my autograph on it. Agree Mike Greenberg was probably that guy everybody passed over when choosing sides, wonder who would be picked first between him and Ovious.

Hilarious story about the autographed baseball, Max!
Greenberg over Ovies any day of the week. Greenberg can be annoying, but he's smart and witty. Ovies, not so much, but I'll take those two 3 PM guys over DG any day of the week. I stopped listening for the most part because the bragging just got unbearable. It would make a good drinking game, but I'd be wasted by 1:30! haven't listen to 99.9 in the last year, Glenn brags so much about trivial things, I couldn't believe a couple years ago during the summer when there was several shark spottings, Glenn was on talking about his trip to the beach and how he intervened some children were swimming and he saw a fin- he is like that guy when you are talking about something you saw or done and he always comes up with something bigger or better- his super model (his words) wife probably sees thru him but puts up with because of the lifestyle Glenn brings to the table-- I still love Mark Packer he was a realist and tells it like it is.

  • StunGunn Sep 16, 2017

Is Mark Packer Billy Packer's son? I liked Billy Packer because he told it like it is as well, even if it was something negative about the team I pull for. He just told the truth without sugar coating it. CBS got really mad at him back in '08 when he declared the Kansas/UNC (elite eight, I think) game "over". Kansas had a huge lead, but Carolina did claw their way back to within four, but then Kansas regained a huge lead. When Packer declared the game to be over, it encouraged viewers to switch channels, something a network tends to frown on. That was the "sticker-gate" year where Roy wore a Kansas sticker in the next game to support his former team that just annihilated his current team. Roy being Roy.

Chris Fowler has been with ESPN for about 30 years, he seems so young but he is 55 years old, he and Herbstriet worked good as a team, Al Michaels is a darn good play by play man but good ones are few and between, good announcers paint a good picture, being a naive 6 year old listening to BB games, Ray Reaves would say he was in the play by play booth, I envisioned him in a telephone style booth right next to the court calling the game.

ACC used to have very colorful people but now all are very bland, Case love to put on a show, Lou Bello was always talking, Bones and Lefty were two of the best coaches with great personalities. Bill Currie was Ray Reaves sidekick and very colorful so colorful he almost got banned, State and Duke played 12-10 game one year, Currie said the game was exciting as artificial insemination and cause a big stir back then, it would be just another saying today

Good blast from the past stories, Max. It's funny what we visualize as kids - taking things literally, like the "booth" you imagined to be a phone booth. Bet you weren't the only one! I went to Tobacco Road in downtown Raleigh, and that's when Mike Maniscalco and Mark Thomas used to do a show from a booth right in the restaurant, and it was the size of a phone booth, and those aren't small guys!

Like Jim Nantz as well - classy guy, like Al Michaels as well. You're right: the good ones are few and far between. I like Jones Angel for the Heels, and Tony Hanes does a good job for State. Anybody but Vitale!

The announcers such as at UNC and Duke and the announcer at Carter-Finley ( the new guys bring too much of WWE mentality and do not care for them, Gary Hahn at State is as bland as they get and really don't care for his style, the new guys announce game as its all about them-I rarely listen to radio play by play unless I am forced too. sign of getting old and thats my 2 cents

Not a fan of Gary Hahn either. I do like Jones Angel. The only time I remember him losing his mind was when Gio went the distance for the winning TD. Loved that call. And play. And yes, I've heard from more than one State fan that Carolina got away with a chop block or two in that play. That was an exciting finish to a rivalry game. Not looking forward to this year's game!
