have to disagree about brownlow, her articles are weak, she has t o use gifs that she thinks are cute, she is the female version of ovious, he is awful, Gold could be good but is limited to Hockey, also tries to be clownish-that is the 2k version of Wral now. I watch 11 and 17 more.

Agree about Mandy MItchell. I also listened to the Marilyn Payne/Brownlow radio show and agree. I do like Lauren though. She knows her stuff.

Hey Max - time to start a "football is here" thread? We're long past spring and almost done (yay!) with summer. Back to football!!

Fialko and Dunlevy I would a grade of B-, ok but not solid, I listen to Marilyn Payne and Brownlow had a radio show on last year, two times were enough, they were hideous, Mandy Mitchell was better than any of the names above. Not enough local news and sports people (people that grew up in the area).

There have been too many changes at WRAL lately. I wonder who will take Jeff's place. Jerod Fialco does an excellent job, as does Mary Dunleavy, who took Mandy Mitchell's place. Mandy does a solid job in everything she covers; I'm not sure why she stepped away from sports. WRAL has reduced their sports staff - I remember another reporter - Ken (Medlin?) who was very good, but he didn't get much air time. I remember Tom Suiter. Bob ("The Captain") Holliday also did a great job, but now he writes for WRAL and does Football Friday. With all the air time devoted to news, you'd think the sports department would be expanded, not decreased. Oh well.....

Not surprised by Gravely moving on, I think the environment at WRAL has gotten so toxic, enough was enough-Back when Tom Suitor was on -it had the best sports department on TV but when they went on the radio, they started slipping, I wish Jeff the best wherever he ends up, being a NC native, I think he will be in the area somewhere, would not be surprised if they brought the clown show to TV (kidding) I used watch wral a lot but have strayed the last few years, rarely watch it anymore. GOOD LUCK JEFF

Welcome home, Max. Football is back! I know you don't watch the NFL, but it was good to see even the pre-season game with the Panthers versus the Bears on Thursday.

Saw where Jeff Gravley is leaving at the end of the year. Hate to see him go - he's been a fixture and done a terrific job as Sports Anchor. Article said he's going to a place where sports are the main thing - wonder where he'll land. Wish him the best, but wish he'd change his mind.

went on a 10 -12 vacation-first at the beach, then headed to Atlanta who live in Kennesaw, just relaxed, got into throwing darts - enjoyed it a lot, it was very relaxing, back home, getting ready for FB, only 3 weeks away, going to the meet the Pack sunday.

Sick of pretty boy as well, T. Add Belichick to that list as well. And Golden State.
Preseason NFL games this week and college ball on 8/31. Almost there!
Glad to see the excitement for Carolina football - season tix sold out. They're not predicted to have a good year, but I hope they surprise some folks.

Yeah Tomlin was extended another year. He isn't going anywhere. Steeler's only had 3 coaches Noll, Cowher and Tomlin. Google Mason Rudolph. Took him in the third round in the 2018 draft, (Ben didn't like it LOL) was on the practice squad last year. Six Five 250. Big like Ben. He is the future although Dobbs was the backup last year, but I think Mason will beat him out this year.

T - I thought I saw that Mike Tomlin got a contract extension? Hope so. It's good to see a team stick with a coach instead of dumping them as soon as they don't meet expectations. What are their plans when Big Ben calls it a day? Pretty Boy is 42 today.

He needs to cave for Zeke because he has produced and if he waits another year Zeke will be used up and Jerry wont pay him the same way he did Murray a few years ago.
TJ should have gotten a flag.

  • StunGunn Aug 1, 2019

Agree, T, and there was no flag on that play. Cam said in the All or Nothing episode that it was "his" fault because he moved. I don't agree. It looked like TJ aimed for Cam's shoulder. Everyone knew Cam had the surgery. That was a dirty play.
Yeah, the Steelers are better off without AB and Le'Veon Bell. Let the players who really want to be there play. Hope Jerry doesn't cave to Zeke, but I bet he will.

Yeah, T, I WISH an area team could win. Wake won back in '06, I think, but like you said, first it was FSU, and now it's Clemson. Syracuse and Virginia are supposed to be pretty good this year. I still think it's Clemson.

Watched "All or Nothing" about the Panthers 2018 season on Amazon. Thought it was really well done. Cam has grown as a leader and teammate. C'mon kickoff!!!!

Good point about what games would be on at 12 if all games were pushed back to 8. Forgot about the almighty dollar and TV deals. I'd say let the teams in cooler parts of the country get the early kick-offs, but that wouldn't work with ESPN. Or the almighty dollar.

Did you guys see the new facility at LSU for the football players? Cushy pod type seats that recline so they can take a nap after practice. Guys were jacked up about them, but doesn't seem all that great to me. Guess since schools can't pay them (above the table, at least - we know it still goes on under the table), they may as well make the players feel "special" and give them perks.

I've worked in kitchens without AC - hotter than HELL. The older I get, the less I can tolerate the heat and humidity. I used to live for October here, but last year it was still hot. Give me December!

I remember in Vietnam-it would get sometimes well over 110 degrees, we kept hydrated, I always carried 4 canteens, would refill them 3 or 4 time in some days, today I would dead in the first hour. I salute these guys going full steam on game days, heat and humidity take a lot out of you.

not too many years ago early games (first 1-4 games ) a lot were played at 6 or 7pm, I am so afraid we are going to see a player get seriously injured by heat or possibly the unthinkable, lot of these players are young and think they are tougher than the heat, I worked for an automobile company and inside the shop area had fans all over but it got hot, these guys would have sweat just dripping off them.

  • Toddler10-21 Jul 19, 2019

I get what you guys are saying. I work in the heat everyday. That's my job I chose it. Scholarship signed lets play football. I remember playing in the heat and cold. Even at 3 its hot as hell. I know heat related deaths happen all the time. If everyone kicks off at 8 what game game will we chose to watch? Me give me the cold weather working or watching football.

Oh, I remember John Clayton! They called him "The Professor". Totally forgot about him. Haven't seen him on other networks. They used to have a funny commercial with him in it - imitating the Will Farrell character. Don't care for the pampas guys either, but do like Herbstreit and some others. I like the ones who don't take themselves too seriously.

Totally agree about the games starting at 12 in all this heat. Those should be night games, with kickoffs at 8. Even kickoffs at 3 are brutal.

middle of July-FB season is just around the corner-going up to the meet the Pack day which is 3 &1/2 weeks away-not looking forward to those first couple of home games at 12 noon, it will be hot as hell-I think they ought to have no games in early sept, till after 3 especially in the south, have some TV games up in the north where it is cooler or indoor arena what is it gonna take for Swoff and the other conf czar's to see, when the death of a player happen on the field, it is tough on fans but they can take cover-those players cannot retreat anywhere.

Not sure which ESPN guy you're talking about, Max. They dumped a lot of people over the year. Some went to Fox and other networks. I think ESPN is hurting due to a lot of people cutting the cord. I still watch ESPN. The morning isn't the same since Mike and Mike split. Golic and Wingo isn't as good as Mike and Mike. Get Up has gotten better. Greenberg is very smart, no denying it, but I liked it so much better when he was with Golic.
I like Outside the Lines, but Bob Ley retired; hasn't been on since October. He was a titan in the industry. Wonder what happened behind closed doors. Still can't listen to DG for the same reasons as you. Holding my breath to see how much Hulu will charge for the ACCN.

Only tv viewing I do is in the morning-for an hour or so I watch some of the old westerns, at night I watch a lot of DVD movies, Cable bills going up and up, I would not mind getting cable, if they had an economy plan-let you pick out 20 channels-and pay a reasonable amount. I do not watch espn, only time would watch them would be to see a game. I think sling tv allows to watch a certain amount of channnels for a small fee but they have no choice in channels just packages.
I think I am about fed up with a lot of it, Skip whatever his name and his arguing partner, Steve Smith, they think know more than anyone, That is what ESPN has turned into. Listen to Sirius and some shows I like and some suck just like the local clowns, like Packman, Wednesday rant is complete

  • StunGunn Jul 2, 2019

The landscape of watching sports at home sure has changed, Max. With the conferences making their own deals with ESPN like the ACC just did, and the SEC and B1G have already done, it makes home viewing more difficult for the average fan. You seem to have a good plan going to home and some away games and supplementing it with watching at a sports bar.

  • Maxwell Silver III Jul 1, 2019
    Bench Warmer

I have just an air antenna- I don't get cable or sat. I go to all the home games and maybe 1 or two road games, others I will watch at a sports bar. I could get cable, Sat or one of the other sources, but so many hidden charges and rate increases, if I stayed home and watched tv a lot maybe it would be feasible, I can't justify it. I just think the ACC (Swofford) has sold the fan out for his own fame and accolades, he is own a lot of radio shows and such-the average fan is what made the ACC but now we are not needed in their eyes.

  • StunGunn Jun 30, 2019

Agree about the heat and humidity in September, Max. Can't be healthy for anyone. They should schedule more night games, but the almighty dollar rules.

What are you going to do about the new ACC network? We just got Hulu (cut the Spectrum cord), and Hulu will offer the ACCN, but I wonder what the cost will be. I hope I don't have to resort to listening on the radio.

Watch the US open Saturday, I became glued to it with Woodland, the guy seems to humble and down to earth, Sunday I started watching it the moment it came on, these announcers were so all over Woods but truth is he has become average player that still can pull off great shots, once the leaders came on, I noticed all the announcers Azinger, Strange, and the rest, all talked about Koepka, like it was his for the taking, Woodland would falter, I got no problem with Koepka but it was easy to tell who they wanted to win, I was glad to see Woodland stay strong and pull it out, they questioned his decision on shot selection but evidently he knew his game better than did, maybe they failed to do their homework. Buck is one of the worst announcers in sports, he got all breaks because of who his father was.

been watching the open, never been a big fan of Jordan Spieth now even less, this guy is a pompous little jurk , couple of years ago he complained of the course not being pristine, now he makes a couple of bad shot or gets bad breaks, he starts blaming everyone, his caddy takes the brunt of his child like behavior. I remember reading a book about Ben Hogan, he and his wife were watching their budget and he said he had to finish 3rd to continue playing(now that is pressure) he ending up winning the tournament and rest is history. These guys have got it made, play golf and finish 75th and you still get a nice paycheck every week, the top guys become instant multi millionairs, a lot of the guys playing sports for a living, Racing, Golf, BB, FB, Hockey always find something to whine about. Just a Saturday June rant, I am not a millionaire but I sure do enjoy playing golf and I pay to do it. When is the last time you paid for a round Jordan.

Been watching/hearing all about the women's soccer team. Two sides, as is the case most times. I can see a player being ecstatic about scoring multiple goals; they've worked so hard to get where they are. But I don't like the group celebrations. I'd say "act like you've been there before", but apparently this is the first World Cup for a lot of the players. Not a soccer fan, but I'll wait to see how they handle defeat.

Glad Toronto won the Championship. Had enough of Curry's shimmy and Greene's dirty play. Their dynasty is over with the injuries to KD and Thompson.

I heard that, T. Boo hoo. I REALLY, REALLY hope Toronto wins tonight, and if not, then in Game 7. They have an embarrassment of riches with or without KD. Time for another team to win, like St. Louis did last night. So happy for those guys. Boston has had enough parades.

Disappointing loss for the Diamond Heels. Always hate to see the season end, but pitching killed them in the Auburn series. Feel bad for Fox and the guys, but that's sports.

Welcome back Max. Yes - football is getting closer. I wonder how much it will cost to get the ACC Network. We cut the cord and have Hulu, which is one of the streaming services to offer the ACC Network. These are the doldrums of summer sports for me.
