So glad we're very close to football season!!

Football is officially here, less than 7 days- starting Sept 1 there will be games 5 straight days. Going to Atlanta middle of the week, going to the Varsity for a burger first day, been a long time since I been there. I'm picking all four big 4 teams to win their first game. ECU will put up a fight and are capable of winning- hope Pack gets the job done.

  • StunGunn Aug 21, 2022
    Sports Legend

Max - the Pack will beat ECU. The Pirates can put up a fight, and I expect they will, but the Pack has too much talent. The only team I see beating State is Clemson. Maybe.

here we are Sept 1 and the FB season is gearing up for a big weekend- I used to like Herbstreit but he is getting arrogant and becoming a know it all. Its Big 10 this and SEC that, as much as I dislike the SEC commis. I wish the ACC czar would be more pro-active, I am not impressed when i hear him speak-- seem like a "lets just kick the can down the road" rather than be aggressive--I will now get to the important items-- UNC/ASU is a toss up-- Pack/Pirates will be dogfight but hopefully Pack will prevail, Wake should handle VMI, look for Duke to be competitive against Temple. LSU over FSU, Miami will handle B-CU, Clemson over GT, UVA and VT over tough in state rivals. Louisville over Syracue, BC will have hands full with Rutgers but I think they will pull it out, Pitt over WVU-- Questions to be answered--- How good will Clemson, NCSU, Pitt and Wake be, will Louisville and FSU step up- will Miami improve as much that media says. Will VT, UVA and UNC move up this season.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 1, 2022

BC, Syracuse, Duke and GT which one breaks out-- lots of questions to answered sooner or later.

Hope you're right about the Big Four all winning. The line keeps moving with the Carolina/App State game. I have my doubts Carolina will win. The "Rattlers" missing 25 players were still able to score.
    Let the games begin!

Duke look good last night - sharp execution,QB ran the system smooth.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 4, 2022

Hell of a weekend - Big Four analysis-- 1- Duke 2- WF 3- NCSU/UNC -- ACC big winners Syracuse and Duke-- Miami -- Did what they were suppose to do UVA, Pitt.
EScapees NCSU, UNC- Big losers VT, BC, Louisville- just your typical opening weekend in the ACC.

  • StunGunn Sep 4, 2022

Yeah Max - what a day! You called it with the Big 4 all winning. As for State and Carolina, they didn't win as much as ECU and App State lost. Those two teams grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. That ECU kicker missing the PAT and then the 41-yard FG cost ECU the game. Feel for that poor kid. Carolina coughing up 40 4th quarter points. Are you kidding me?? Mack doing the locker room happy dance?? Hope Chizik was kicking some tail. Pathetic lack of D. Maye is doing really well for a rookie QB, but unless the defense improves, it will be a long season.
Good for State and Carolina to win those games, but a lot of room for improvement.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 7, 2022

I watched FSU/LSU on ESPN 3, (I don't get local channels) you could get on what's call sky cam, no announcers the P.A system was miked up, it was a pleasant experience not having to listen play by play and color guys rattling off useless trivial bull. I really enjoyed it, would a great cost cutter for networks.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 7, 2022

I think there a good possibility of Big four sweep this weekend also.

  • StunGunn Sep 8, 2022

I hope so, Max. State and Carolina play cupcakes. Wake gets Hartman back.
ND will be a real test for Carolina when they play in a few weeks.

  • StunGunn Sep 11, 2022
    Sports Legend

Well, Wake and State looked good. Carolina and ND, not so much. Carolina is in big trouble if they don't get their defense going. They gave up over 20 points in the third quarter. I don't like their early bye week, and they will be facing an embarrassed ND team that will be looking to right the ship.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 11, 2022
    Bench Warmer

I think N.D. is way overrated but as usual the media give the benefit of doubt. I think Ap. State is a Jeckle and Hyde, they have 63 tacked on them, then hold A&M and win the game. Alabama, I thought this was gonna be the Saturday, not a big Texas fan. Didn't see any other games but watched a replay of Duke. I predicted Duke to make a bowl this year, all four big four will have stout test (maybe not Duke) there is a possibility the big 4 goes 4-0 again.

  • StunGunn Sep 12, 2022
    Sports Legend

Well, I hope Carolina doesn't lose this weekend - they have a bye:) Week 5 should be telling - the cupcakes have been eaten (even if they gave Carolina indigestion - lol). State just may be the best team in the ACC. Clemson doesn't look all that good, especially at QB. This may be State's year. Saw speculation that Rhule might go to Nebraska. Would hate that for the Cornhuskers. Panthers looked bad for most of the game. Almost pulled out the win, but that late FG by Cleveland (that kicker is awesome) and a terrible roughing the passer call doomed the Panthers.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 12, 2022

Pack has tough game, home game will help. Hopefully take care of business, go to Clemson 4-0- I think that game will guage how they can finish up.

Two weeks into ACC football: most surprising team-- Duke
Most Improved team: Syracuse Most Disappointing team: Louisville--
Seems like all the talk of expanding - 20 team leagues has disappeared for now- the expansion of the playoffs kind of halted that. It is still time for the ACC to tell N.D. on or off the pot- the in all sports but FB is getting old. The old commish nor the commish has the stones to tell N.D. this- this is my 2 cents penny for your thoughts.

  • StunGunn Sep 14, 2022

Totally agree about ND, Max. Sick of them calling the shots. I like mike Brey, but for football ND can kiss it. They're not all that. And even if they were, who needs them.. Not the ACC.
This is the year for State. They can beat Clemson with State having the better QB.
Yes - surprised at the quick improvement in Duke football. Good for them.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 15, 2022
    Bench Warmer

As a Pack fan I just want to beat Texas Tech, then worry about the next game. I would not mind if ACC would go to 9 games, 3 non conference-(Mandatory 1 P-5, 1 G-5) I will give Duke credit they play 3 D-1 teams 2 of them P-5 (Kansas and Northwestern). I think Miami is in for a rude awakening at College Station-they will be some angry folks down there. The so called ACC Net is none other than another platform for ESPN-the programming sucks, ESPN and ABC gets the top games and filters the rest down to ACCN.

  • StunGunn Sep 15, 2022
    Sports Legend

I liked Packer and Durham on the ACCN, but that show was canceled. I'm not a Packer fan, but Wes made him bearable. Now Packer has some afternoon show on. He thinks he's the be all and end all, just like his father. Very arrogant. Agree that ESPN and ABC get the good games and the less interesting games end up on the ACCN. At least it gives us a chance to see games that might not be televised. Good luck to your Pack this weekend. They're favored by a lot. Saw where Nebraska might be interested in Doeren. They could offer him a ton of money, but he seems happy in Raleigh.

I like Packer, I wasn't a fan of Wes, he was to tow the ESPN corporate line, I have listen to Packer for almost 20 years, his Prime Time in the ACC was a great show, he would be better as a stand alone show, the morning show was better than this show. The two co-host are not that good, to much repeating, lots of cliches, the girl is the worse, if they want diversity, get some one that's good. I don't think Pack pick these two, just my 2 cents. I think ACC will get at least 10 teams in bowl games, GT and BC probably not but it's wide open.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 18, 2022

What a Saturday, I think The hype on N.D. is wearing thin. I think they could lose next week, big four teams are 11-0, undefeated for the 3rd straight week, next week gets tougher.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 18, 2022

If Pack can get Leary straightened out, I think they can beat Clemson.

  • StunGunn Sep 20, 2022
    Sports Legend

Agree about the new show with Packer - not as good as his morning show with Wes. I do like Wes - Packer needed an easy going co-host, and Wes is easy going.
This is definitely the year for State to beat Clemson - their QB just isn't any Trevor Lawrence. I can see State winning the ACC championship this year - it sets up nicely for sure. I don't see Carolina beating Notre Dame, even though Notre Dame isn't all that. If Carolina had to struggle to eek out a win against Georgia State and App State (who isn't a slouch), I don't see them beating ND. I like Mack, but I think the game has passed him by. There's something missing. Gotta give him credit for reviving the program and excitement, but something is missing. They didn't play up to their talent the past two years.

I think the reins will be passed to Chizit, which I think it would be a mistake. I was looking Packs new, I been disappointed so far, haven't even watched it this week. Moving the ACC HQ to Charlotte sucks, Greensboro has done such a good job for many years. Hope they don't move the tournament, the ACC Tournament in Greensboro is special. ESPN owns the ACC Net and are having to much control. Power 5 ought negotiate a contract will all networks, control time of games and placement.

Agree about moving the ACC Headquarters to Charlotte, Max. I'm glad it's still in the state of NC, but it's like someone just HAD to move it. So much history in Greensboro.

Well, Carolina stunk it up against ND. Then the players getting into it on the sidelines. Not a good look. Frustrating when they recruit talent but the talent isn't harnessed.
Clemson/State looks to be a good game; hope the weather doesn't interfere and no players get injured. Hate to see games played in the rain.

  • Maxwell Silver III Sep 28, 2022

Whatever sport, I have said it's easier to coach to 3 star or mid range 4 star than high 4 star players, most, especially 5 star players have been told how great they are and are coddled thru the process, I love watching 3 star guys work hard and get better and better, I worked with Dee Hardison and we became good friends, we picked back and forth, he worked hard and was a pretty good pro with giants, I was so sad when he passed, it's all about commitment once you get to college, my point lower class recruits will try harder, all teams have had that one player that just overachieved.

  • StunGunn Sep 30, 2022
    Sports Legend

Agree about the four and five star players who are told they are the next Jordan or Brady since they were in middle school. The NIL makes things worse. Players pick schools based on $$$ and will transfer for greener pastures. College sports will never be the same.
It looks like Ian won't make as much of an impact on tomorrow's games as originally thought. The field will still be wet, and that can cause players to suffer injuries. Oh well. It's all about the television $$$ and nothing to do with player safety.

Hindsight maybe bad weather would have been a benefit. The problem was Pack's O line, couldn't protect Leary or Open holes, Clemson was on it's game.

  • StunGunn Oct 3, 2022
    Sports Legend

Max - the game was competitive for a good portion, but Clemson was playing at home, which helped. I couldn't believe all the fanfare - the bus ride, with the police escort, etc. You'd think it was the national championship game. It's one loss; State shouldn't let Clemson beat them twice. I heard/read that no team prepares like Clemson. They look at game tape like no other and are prepared for every offensive and defensive move their opponent makes. Dabo tries to sell the "country boy" image, but a reporter who used to cover Clemson described Dabo as "Machovelanian" in his coaching.

Being at he was a big boost, they something the o line was doing on film and took advantage, he kind of reminds me of K, I don't like when head coaches get involved on the sideline, I think the good ole boy image is phony, it's must have big for them, since they rush the field. I was with someone that had 99.9 on their car radio, got me to thinking, wonder where ole David Glenn now a days, with his super modelish wife.

  • StunGunn Oct 5, 2022
    Sports Legend

LOL at David Glenn! I heard on the radio that he's teaching at UNC-W. I remember him saying that he loves the beach, so now that his kids are grown, maybe he moved there? I still get some sort of notices from the "David Glenn" show, but it's not on anywhere around here. I still remember him bragging about having the only "statewide radio show" in North Carolina. Yeah - his wife, the "Lovely and Talented Maria" he had to bring up every day. He's smart, but I don't miss his bragging at all. Speaking of super-model wives, I'm surprised Tom and Gizelle are calling it quits. I guess she really expected him to retire for real. What a waste, because I think he's done after this year anyway.

Max - Leary's MRI came out clear, and he's listed as "day to day", and State's schedule is very favorable, so I think State dodged a bullet with Leary's injury.

  • Maxwell Silver III Oct 13, 2022

Pack has got a tough final 6 games, couple of breaks (hopefully) Upstarts Syracuse and Louisville on the road (won't be easy) should beat VT and BC and 2 rival games-1 home and 1 on the road game.

Things got tougher for State losing Leary for the season. Was surprised to hear about his torn pec after the news that the MRI came out clear. Gotta feel for Leary - two years in a row and he's done for the season. He's smart and tough. Wonder what he'll do next year. Happy (and surprised) that Carolina beat Miami. The game with Duke was a dog fight; glad Carolina pulled out the win and are bowl eligible. They play Wake and State - tough games.

  • Maxwell Silver III Nov 15, 2022

well that was a let down-- M.J. had a bad day-- first two drives- smoothe then I think B.C threw him some curves he was not ready for-- he got frustrated, injuries has hurt--S.Jackson was out, Pennix was hurt, Gibson got hurt early. The bright spot was Michael Allen, he is gonna be good, will be growing pains next year but they have the talent. Last 2 games up for grabs- some may not buy into it but Clemson still is above and beyond-- they play N.D. again they win. There is a cluster of 7- 8 teams after Clemson that are close together

  • StunGunn Nov 18, 2022
    Sports Legend

Max - Clemson may still be the best team in the ACC, but that's a pretty low bar. Clemson isn't what they used to be since Trevor Lawrence left for the NFL.
I can see State winning their final two games, and that would be a pretty good record at 9 and 3. It's so hard for me to say what Carolina will do. I can see them losing both final games or going 1 and 1. That would be a good season, certainly better than expected at 9 and 3 or 10 and 2. It will be hard to beat Clemson in the ACC Championship game, even a less than stellar Clemson team. If only the Heels' defense was half as good as the offense, they'd be a tough out.
