With North Carolina set to launch mobile sports betting statewide in a matter of weeks, one of the biggest brands in gambling is now set to operate in the state.
Caesars announced Tuesday an extension of its partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to include mobile sports betting through Caesars Sportsbook. The EBCI previously applied for an operator license from the North Carolina Lottery Commission.
Both Cherokee casinos in western North Carolina are operated under Harrah's, a Caesars' brand.
“We are excited for this new venture with Caesars Entertainment and the enhancements it provides to our Tribal enterprise,” said Michell Hicks, principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, in a statement. “We look forward to the continued opportunities that will benefit the future of our membership.”
The Cherokee and Catawba, both federally recognized tribes, have both applied for an operator license. Operators must have written designation agreements with teams, venues or sports governing bodies in order to get a license.
Caesars said it intends to go live at noon on March 11, the start date for mobile sports betting in North Carolina. Operators can allow customers to create and fund accounts on March 1.
Caesars will have exclusive rights to mobile sports betting at the two casinos and on Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian land in far western North Carolina.
As many as nine operators could go live on March 11, including bet365, Fanatics Sportsbook, Bet ESPN, Underdog Sports, BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings and Caesars. The Catawba have not yet announced a partner for its license.
The lottery commission has yet to announce which operators have been licensed.
